Looking down makes me lag like hell.

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:03 am

As posted on steam forums:

Well, it seems there's a lot of problems regarding graphics on Skyrim, and most of them have something simple as an answer. I hope this is one of them.

Whenever I look downwards in FPS(weapons out or in, doesn't matter) my screen starts lagging so badly I can count the FPS myself. However, if I move(walk/run/sprint) and look downwards, it's as smooth as a baby's bottom.

dl.dropbox(DOTGOESHERE)com/u/45118787/2012-03-18_00007.jpg

Above the line, I can sit still, look whichever way I want, and not feel a single bit of lag.
Under the line, I can't do anything.

While in sneak mode, the line seems to move up, which makes sneaking and shooting a bow damn near impossible.

The oddest thing about it, it's not my video card, not my setting or anything else. I've reloaded an older save from the same character, and it works without any issues, still or moving. It clearly is a script issue somewhere in my save game.

What I've tried:
- removing all my mods. And I mean EVERYTHING.
- removing all my perks.
- removing all my items from Proudspire Manor (only house I've bought and stored things into), including the book shelves.
- DELETING all my items.
- Removing quest items from my inventory using the console.
- Used console to complete all my on-going quest, so check if there's a script problem.

Anymore ideas?
I could try uploading my save game, and see maybe someone else can find a way to fix it.

Thank you in advance for all the support.

EDIT: Seems like you guys are fond of DXDIAG no matter what the problem is, so here it is:

The "no links for new members" is a spam prevention method.

As for the problem, no clue. May be tied into their new "grass shadows" that came in the last patch.

Okay, so I've posted a thread like this one on the steam forums. One of the members there gave me some information:

So, no idea how this would affect anything, but looking at these two save files (your and mine) the following numbers are considerably larger in yours:

Total Misc Count: 14 Total Misc Size: 146614 - Data: 146614 Overhead: 0 Debug: 0 Min Misc Size:

0 Max Misc Size: 0 Average Misc Size: 10472.43

As opposed to mine:

Total Misc Count: 14 Total Misc Size: 10505 - Data: 10505 Overhead: 0 Debug: 0 Min Misc Size: 0 Max Misc Size: 0 Average Misc Size: 750.36.

In the Misc section you also have this line

136353 Temp Effects

I do not have that line in my save, and it definitely seems to be the cause of the larger numbers in the first section of this post. Again, I have no idea how this would affect anything.

Edit: turns out I do have the line in my save, though it has a value of 211.

Can you make any sense of this?

And what would I do to fix this?

Extra Edit: This problem dates before the new patch was released. I cannot blame this on the patch, because I haven't been able to play the game for a few days now. Been trying all I could to fix this crap.

Proper game play requires a real video card produced by a real gamers' 3D graphics company. Intel does not qualify. Simple as that.

Corrected Skyrim Minimum Requirements

* Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
* Processor: Dual Core 2.3 GHz C2D or equivalent CPU
* 3GB System RAM
* 6GB free HDD Space
* Direct X 9 compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM (and
sufficient performance to actually put that VRAM to use)

* DirectX compatible sound card
* Internet access for Steam activation

Practical minimum graphics card, AMD: HD 4670, nVIDIA: GT240

You have a hybred type gfx system. Intel to save power then it should switch to at least a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Best would be a GT 580M. Your DX only shows a driver for the onboard intel gfx.

What Model of Satellite P750 do you have? Does it have a GFX chipset other than intel? Do you have the latest drivers from TOSHIBA installed?

Goto your control panel > device manager > "expand" display adapters. See what you have installed.

If you have a GFX other then intel. Then good chance youl need to fiddle with the power settings to keep the laptop from switching to low power mode.

control panel > power options > "set to" High perfomance.

Skyrim hits the CPU hard. One option would to shut done hyperthread in your Bios and just run multi core.

To give you some idea. A laptop Geforce GT 580M would be like a PC GTX 560. But would still have no real texture fill rate. Would likely need to shut AA off.
A GT 540M would play the game in the start ok. But in time as your Lvl goes up. So does all the extra GFX effects show up. Magic and such plus the extra demand for physX.

Depending on the nVIDIA firmware, some mobile cards are doubly crippled, maybe even triply. First, the specs are dumbed down, then, if it's an "Optimus", the entire front end function is removed. It depends on the Intel chip to perform the preliminary processing, so the Intel video chip cannot be disabled. After that, quality control failures result in a substantial number of Optimus products being unwilling to take up the responsibility for demanding graphics when they are supposed to do so.

I can definitely say this is not the 64hz bug, nor is it a problem with the OPs graphics card. I downloaded their save and sure enough looking down while standing still (and other occurrences described http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2608270) crippled my fps to around 14.

Edit: Their save as a text file: http://www.mediafire.com/?ac8papza5mutqou

About time someone understood my issue(nice to see you here as well). If I thought I was just lagging I'd just say that my laptop svcks, but it doesn't.
However, all my old saves work smooth.

I also have a 540M installed, but for some odd reason, it's not selectable in the options menu of the launcher.

PS: I can play Crysis, Mass Effect 3, Deus Ex: HR, Saints Row the Third, Witcher, Fallout, Black Ops, and many other games on this laptop without a "real video card."

Which mods is the broken save dependent on? Look it up using Wrye Bash. Possibly some mod created the mother of all Papyrus worms! :)

Not sure how to convert the text file back to a ess. But I was able to load the ess save from the Steam forum. I had no red line or slow down looking in down. maxed 60 fps on ultra. But in sneek mode looking out. the GFX cards poped 100% from 20% and the TES.exe started screeming page faults 1.5 megs in about 4 secs. The game save is corrupted. Its looking for something it cant find.

If there is a problim with a save. I have a lot of tools I could chase it down. But Good chance its a mod that alterd the OS or Skyrim.

As for the DxDiag for this laptop. I would try to find a fix for the drivers not listed. The game needs to know what kind of computer it is running on. The 540M should be listed in the skyrim options graphics adapter. Check and see whats listed in Admin > My documents > my game > Skyrim > RendererInfo. See if the 540M is listed.

I think your computer can run Skyrim np. But with an older toone. you may need to pull back the settings a little over time. HeHe Lols, My Oblivion game says my computer svcks and sets it all to low. I have to set everything manualy.

If Skyrim cannot detect your system. Expect all kinds of problims. I have over 100 games in my steam account. Not one of them comes close to the demands that Skyrim puts on my computer. Also none of my other games comes close to looking as good as Skyrim.

You click "save as" and save it as .ess rather than .ess.txt .

Alright, so I'm not exactly sure on how to use it, or what info you're asking for, but I loaded it up, went to my "saves" tab, and loaded my most recent save game.
On the right, there's a small window with all my mods, and Skyrim.esm and Update.esm at the top of it.
Only Skyrim.esm is ticked, everything else is unticked.

The redline was added by me, to outline the general area. xD If I had a redline, I'd be worried. Much more worried.
Well, it worked fine up until a certain point. This is my second playthrough of the game and the first one was completely incident free.

My 540M is not listed in RendererInfo.
Also, I've already done a clean install of Skyrim, and the only thing that I've kept was my save folder. I've even deleted all my inis and mods(after backing them up, of course) and it still didn't work.

The last possible thing it could be, is the save itself.

What should I do about getting Skyrim to understand that I have a much better powerhouse on board?

Update: It turns out that my Skyrim is indeed using my nVidia card, since I forcefully set it to do so via the nVidia control panel. I've read many posts that even if the Launcher claims that the Intel card, it can be overwritten to use any other GFX card.

I've set it up, and considering that I have no changes, or no lag(except this awful bug), it must mean that I have been using my nVidia all along.

If it's related to your save file (which it looks as though it is), then it's likely caused by a mod you were running (and perhaps uninstalled). Can you tell us all the mods you've run that would have affected this particular save? How did you install them - manually, NMM or SW?

Also, disable all your mods. All of them. Regenerate your .ini files. Verify your steam files. Now start a brand new game. Does the problem persist?

All mods were completely deleted. A fresh install of Skyrim was made (I never had to change my ini files to get it working properly) but the issue in the save game persists.

The only mods that could have distantly affected this is an Enchanting Mod, an Arrow Script, which unequips my arrows everytime I unequip my bow. And that's it. Everything else is either a recolour or a non-enchanted armor, which is really basic stuff, the biggest being a proudspire manor extension. (A few mannequins, a couple a chest and crafting gear. All defaults.)

Starting a new game works fine, and so do my older saves(in which I had all these mods enable anyway)

Sorry mate, a bit out of ideas here! It all points to a corrupted save game and I don't know how you'd carry out some kind of remedial surgery on it. Hope you get it sorted.
