The appraiser is Vex in the Ragged Flagon. Go through the ratways. You might have to start the thieves guild though.

There is some dialogue with Maul, but as far as I know he either tells you to p*** off or if you persuade him you're a scumbag like he is, he'll tell you to go to Vex in the Thieves' Guild. I'm not sure if Vex has any dialogue, though, if you aren't a guild member.

You have to do a quick 3 stage quest for membership into the thieves guild, before Vex will tell you about the gems. Then you start the quest to find them all and bring them back to her.

With out using a guide this has probably got to be one of the longest quests in the game! I heard there is 24 gems to collect in total. I have a grand total of one which I beleive I found in Whiterun's Hall of the Dead. Is there somewhere (in-game) you can get clues as to where they are located?

That svcks in a way. Surely they could put a clue somewhere in-game, like in a book or something? I think without using the Wiki the only way you will come across the Gems is by pure chance. There is no way you could just set out looking for them, with the hundreds of locations...

Even worse, I have it on pretty good authority that at least ONE of the gems is in an area that could be described as a "http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OneTimeDungeon" (meaning, you can't access that area again after a particular section of the story is complete).

I'm just glad I found it while I was in there. Because if not, It would have been rage on a level equal to when I left Raven Rock without the Energy Weapons bobblehead in Fallout 3. I positively SEETHED over that naked spot on my display stand, and eventually ate about 12 hours of gameplay just to re-load a much older save and go get the S.O.B...

Ahh yes, The Thalmor Embassy. I would have missed this the first time through if I was not such a loot'aholic.

Haha!

That my friend is when I learnt to save on a regular basis! For me it was more like six hours of replay but it was a valuable lesson learned.
