Question - Dragonshouts Selection

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:46 am

Can we choose which Shout to get first?
Basically, I just want to get Slow Time (TIID-KLO-UL) as I probably won't be using any other Shouts. So to get Slow Time, can I just go anywhere with a Dragonstone and freely pick whatever Shout I want? or do I have to go to one of these specific locations listed on Wiki (Labyrinthian, Korvanjund, Hag's End)?

Also, Can we use different Shouts right after one another? Or do we have to wait for the cooldown before using a different Shout?

Thank you!

All Words of Power are learned in specific locations.

You need to visit the world walls to learn shouts, then you need to kill a dragon and absorb it's soul to use them. And yes there is a cooldown between shouts that depends on the shout and it's level. there is an item named Amulet of Talos that reduces the shouts cooldown by 20%

You can't change shouts until after the cooldown.

Where do you get that amulet? I thought I had the Talos amulet, but it has a different enchantment?

each world wall is tied to a shout, and will have the first unknown word of that shout. and the very first shout everyone will be able to use is Fos, because you have to learn the word to get the dragonstone, and the you need the dragonstone to spawn dragons, and the first dragon soul is automatically assigned to Fos.

My questions really are just:
  • Are we in any control of which Shout we can get first and last?
  • I want to get Slow Time (TIID-KLO-UL) as fast as possible. How do I do this?

Thank you for all replies so far

All Words of Power are learned in specific locations.
By going to specific locations, are we in control of which Shout we can attain first?

Don't we automatically absorb & store Dragon Soul after killing a Dragon and can choose which Shout to upgrade afterwards?

After attaining my first Fos (Unrelenting Force), can I then go to Labyrinthian, Korvanjund, Hag's End right after to get Slow Time as my next Shout?

I'm still confused on the Shouts, Words, & Dragon Souls mechanic. Is there any place where they have a clear description of how they work? Information on Wikis (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Shout & http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Shout) are still very confusing at this point :(

Yes, you can go to whichever dungeon you choose to get your next shout. Assuming you don't die (if it happens to be a bit high level for you).... Now, I think I've noticed that there's not a "single given order" to obtain the first word of a new shout: because the game doesn't know where you'll wind up first, if you go to Korvanjund or Hag's End before Labyrinthian, you will likely get the first of the words for slow time there.

At least, seems how that's working for my toons....

thuink how weird it would be to learn the 3rd word before the first or have the first and 3rd but as nothing to link they your stuck to a 1 word shout...

na it's dynamic and you always get the first of the 3 then the 2nd of the 3.

the "whole phrase" is locked into 3 word walls so going to any of those word walls gives you the first word and you can get the first word from any of the 3 locations and get the individual Walls in any order.

Your first unlocked Shout is always going to be FUS of Unrelenting Force. Nothing you can do to change that, you have to get that far in the main quest before dragons will start appearing.

You can find Word Walls and learn the shouts before this, but you won't be able to use the associated shouts until you spend dragon souls to unlock them. You can choose to hoard your souls and only unlock the shouts you wish to use. However, I find I'm practically drowning in dragon souls by mid-game and usually have a soul to spend whenever I encounter a new word wall.

In order to learn Slow Time, you will have to visit the Word Walls at Labyrinthian, Korvanjund, Hag's End. It doesn't matter what order you visit them. You always learn the next word of the shout associated with that Wall.

Note that gaining access to the word wall at Labyrinthian requires near-total completion of the College of Winterhold quests -- and you can expect to encounter several other Word Walls in the process...

Furthermore, the Word Wall at Korvanjund requires you to take sides in the Civil War.

Slow Time is a neat Shout, but I think you'll find it less useful in practice than you expect.

You can learn every word of power before killing your first dragon. You just won't have any souls to unlock them. If you first get out of Helgen and go to those 3 places and learn slow time, you'd need to kill 3 dragons after the watchtower dragon still to unlock all three words of slow tome.

^^ha figured you needed to do the questlines to even get there.
