Easy way to know CPU Bottleneck

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 3:30 am

Lately i been getting horrible performance, even when reinstalling windows... i see that my GPU usage is at 100%, does that means i have bottleneck or is the otherway arround with the CPU?

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I believe that if your CPU is the bottleneck then your GPU will never be used 100% and vice versa. It sounds like your performance has just recently decreased, and that won't be caused by hardware unless something is overheating. Check your temps while playing. Make sure you are using the latest drivers for your GPU. Have you installed any mods? There are a few mods out there that can bring down performance if your hardware isn't strong enough. Just a few suggestions, there are people here that are far more knowledgeable on the subject than me that can help you out.

Hi,

As this is a hardware forum....everyone would need to know at least the min about your System.....

Is this a laptop? If issues also when installing windows, could be something like motherboard drivers, disk access drivers , and the like ...heck could be a BIOS issue....but just guessing here...

Post a DXdiag...<<
Yes if your GPU is at 100% while playing your probably Overfilling your GPU and its using System memory.....This is painfully slow, FPS will drop to the teens after being in the 30 - 50 range.

My max CPU temp was 52C according to HWMonitor, my individual max core Temp was 47C and my max GPU temp was 72C all these after playing super choppy for arround 20 minutes.

My System

Win7 x64
AMD PhenomII x4 810 ( OC to 3.1Ghz)
HD 5770 1Gb
6 Gb DDR3

So i do have a bottleneck? whats the cause my CPU or my GPU?

That's pretty much a perfect match hardware wise. Maybe you have a bad overclock, the multiplier isn't unlocked on that processor. Turn it down a notch.

My rig is pretty similar to yours and I play perfectly smooth with high settings @ 1080p, 2xAA, 2xAF;

Win7 64bit
Athlon II X4 640 (quad, 3ghz)
Radeon 5770
4GB DDR3

I also noticed you use a low'ish resolution (1280 x 1024) so upgrading to a new graphics card will make no difference at all if you play in that resolution.

I have no idea what happenend... i used to play the game to 55-60 fps mostly everywhere and 45 in markarth with patch 1.4, my lowest spot was 34 in Riften looking from jarl place to the plaza, all of a sudden my system is so damn slow... i get 25 in that same spot in riften and my max fps is 36, i dont know what caused it that made me lost like 45% of my performance... i tried reinstalling the game and didnt work, tried today reinstalling win7 x64 and same thing, i been using exact same drivers so whats the deal? havent done anything else, why my system is so slow even after a whole clean system? its... strange... my temps are ok so it just blows my mind... and its only this game, any other game works flawlessly, The Darkness II i get a constant 68-75 fps everywhere, Left4DeadII i get a constant 70-80, Kingdoms of Amalur i get a constant 60-65... what the F is going on?

I have noticed the same, I used to play this game very smoothly about month ago on my first character. Last week I made a new character, still the same settings, yet my performance is now really poor. Only difference in my hardware is that ive downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia that say they are supposed to improve performance in Skyrim but in practice, the opposite.

It happened with me also, I did download the new drivers but the sudden decrease of performance started with the beta... right now I can barely walk without stuttering and quick freezes, specially in Windhelm, but happening in every other major cities and some small ones as well. I'm hoping for a fix, like the OP said, the game used to be smooth, almost never going under 30, but right now it rarely goes beyond.

I have a similar problem. When in crossfire both my GPU's are using about 40 - 60% at all times and never both being fully used.

why my system is so slow even after a whole clean system?

so is the whole system bogged down when say opening a web browser or any other app? or is this just happening during gaming? you could have a hardware problem

Going to try a few games, but i think its just Skyrim... i have a feeling its either my CPU or my GPU, more suspicious of the later.

My problem is quite similar. Always had excellent performance. Clocked 400+ hrs if gameplay and all of a sudden one day started getting freezes. I've timed them to occur almost every 70sec the game would freeze for 5sec and then resume normally only to reoccur 70sec later.
During freeze CPU spikes to nearly 100% with tesv.exe as the highest process. I keep my system well maintained, I've optimized as best as possible for gaming.
Windows 7-64bit
Core2duo e8500 @3.16ghz
8GB ddr2 800htz
Gtx 560ti 2GBddr5 (296.10 beta driver)
All System drivers n BIOS up to date
Game patch 1.5
I thought the new gfx card was causing a CPU bottlneck so i over clocked a stable 3.60 to no avail.
All temps in normal ranges. Other games play flawlessly, only skyrim experiences this freeze.
The only mod change I had around time of first freeze was the removal of super Enb replaced by RCRN.

I think Bethesda somehow messed the compiler optimizations in 1.5, i installed 1.4 again and SkyBoost and VOILA! went back to 58fps as max and my lowest became 41, now... oddly enough i installed 1.5 and newest update and i still get super fast performance... the thing is SkyBoost does not work with newer versions... so what the heck? i just dont get it... its like SkyBoost made 1.5 faster even after removing it... SUPER ODD but glad i still had 1.4 and SkyBoost lying arround.

That's an interesting approach. One of the few I haven't tried yet. Currently in the process of reinstalljng skyrim from scratch and then re-adding my mods one at a time.
on a sidenote- not sure if anyone else uses SMIM (static mesh improvement) - when I viewed my performance monitor during game and freezes there was constant read/write activity with the farmhouse file from the SMIM.
Im not tech savvy enough to know what that exactly means or if that's supposed to be there, but I wonder if that has anything to do with.
ill report back following reinstall if I get my previous performance back.

Ok here is what i did, installed 1.4 (i have a bunch of saved folders each for each update from Steam) and SkyBoost and run it, then made a second copy of my 1.4 installation and let my initial copy of 1.4 to be updated in Steam to LATEST (while still keeping the backup of 1.4 with skyboost) then somehow... IT WORKS! super fast performance even when my steam 1.5 update does not have SkyBoost! its like skyboost performance keept running in somehow or stored in cache.. i dont know! but it works!

Skyrim is a strange animal....best advice you find something that works keep steam offline afterwards(if possible) and avoiding the launcher at all costs once your settings are to your liking.
