Windows all of sudden has a problem with skyrim

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 11:09 am

Hi!

Been playing skyrim every since it came out out in november. However tonight it would not load, but I got a windows default message saying it is someting wrong, that the program will be shut down and that it will let me know if it finds a solution. Yeah right it will.. Was playing it just hours earlier with no problem

.. I use very few mods, only 2 or 3 and I keep them all updated. Program will normally not even get to launcher if I have forgotten to update, so this problem that I have now seem different. I also made sure my internet connection works, since steam usally goes on strike if it isnt.

So what I have tried to get skyrim going again is:

1. Make sure my mods are updated.
2. Rebooted the computer.

What else should I try? I'm not the biggest PC expert and running out of ideas to try get my game working.. Help please! :)

So did the program run for you and then close itself, followed by one of these messages: "Skyrim.exe has encountered an error and had stopped working" or "Windows has encountered a problem"? That is an issue that Bethesda is trying to fix at the moment, so there isn't much you can do to solve it. Don't run Steam or Skyrim in compatibility mode , but do make sure you have both running as Administer. Check to see if you have any firewalls that might be blocking the program (either Steam or Skyrim itself), turn off any programs that are running in the background which look for viruses etc. because that can cause Skyrim to not run. Please tell me the name of the mods you are using and what they do because I can help you more if you let me know!! Otherwise, I will be here all day listing possible fixes to the issue you are having!

Shademyth: Thank you for your reply, really apprechiate it!

Earlier when I ran skyrim it did not close itself and I did not get a message from windoes. It was hours later when I started steam and and sucessefully reacher the launcher. I then pressed "play" to start the game and I got the message "skyrim has stopped working".

As I said, I had errors before, but nothing of this kind that seems to be linked to windoes.

I did check my firewall and it shows nothing out of the ordinary. I havent made any hardware or software changes beetween when the game was working and now when it isnt. Also running as administer.

The names of the mods I am using are:
* Extra hotkeyes (adds extra hotkeys)
* Script dragon (makes the previous mod work)
* Fixed followers Lite (fixes bugs with followers, bow etc..)

The first two mods are extracted to the game file map, and the third mod is subsribed from steam.

I'm here to help. :) So you left your computer running- was Steam online that whole time or was it in offline mode? Did you make sure that Skyrim and Steam are added to your firewall's exception list? Sometimes firewalls will block a program without letting you know; thus, the game will act weird when you try to run it.

Yes, steam was running online in the background and it was only a matter of hours(a gym visit) between the two times. Actually, before I played the first time, steam went offline for a lil while and the game wouldn't load because of that, but that I fixed within minutes.

I tried to acutally disable the firewall for a minute to see if that was what causing it, but no, still the same message.

Garhg, this is getting really frustrating :(

Should I just shut the computer down and let windows "sleep on it" or is there anyting else I can do atm?

Think there could be a fault at Beths part?

Well if you leave your computer running for a long time, whether or not it's in use, it will get hot & it'll be using RAM. I suggest that you turn it off when you're not using it; do not plug your computer directly into a wall socket. Let it rest for a day or so until it's cooled down all the way. Then have Steam go online & verify Skyrim's file cache. Right click on Skyrim then go to Settings and I think under the advanced tab there should be "verify file cache". Allow it to complete, try to run the game, and let me know how that turns out for you.

Well, I dont have the computer running for that long usally, always have it turned off during the day, and then shut it down when I go to bed. But yes, no harm in letting it cool down I suppose. Also have all the plugs in an external socket that I can switch on an off. But yeah, I'm lazy, dont always reach under teh table to switch it off. Will tonight though.

í'll take your advice and the the computer rest and then try the "Verify file cache".

Thank you again for your help, and I will get back to you later with updates. :)

My rig has been running for 4 months....this is since my upgrade (only reason it got turned off......my last run was 9 months..I don't turn my computer off...there is no need.

IT does go to sleep when I do...and promptly wakes up when I get home from work. :)

Skyrim was patched today and after the patch the game would crash on launch for me as well. Disabling all mods had no effect either, so I'm blaming the patch.

Same my rig is always on unless I am doing maintenance or feel like a restart is in order. I use no sleep no hibernation....my crap Dell XPS lasted in this state for 8 years straight.

Puh, finally got it to work! Grr, that was hard work. Read up here in this section adn found out that other members had the same problem. So I uninstalled the game, removed the save files, delinted the ini files, reinsalled, verified the cash files, started the game, made an autosave and then transvered my save files back. Seems to be working now. Do I dare pop on my mods again now though?

I'm glad to hear you got it working again. What type of mods are you wanting to install? You can risk it, but you may want to wait until people have updated the mods to be usable with 5.24. Sometimes the modders need time to catch up their mods to the current version of Skyrim. If you go with Bethesda's texture packs, I wouldn't touch any other texture mods because they might not work; Skyrim may throw a hissy fit.

Personally the only mods I use until the patching subsides is antibloat and warglaives(pref and if they cause an issue they are gone just like that). Don't get me wrong I love mods but imo using them now is like turning your game into a Beta so unless you can self diagnose or don't mind the issues hold off a few months.
