can't even launch the game (I hate drm, defective by design)

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:40 am

I have not played skyrim for a while figure im a bit bored so ill give it another shot I launch steam in online mode because I figured its been a while and maybe there will be updates or whatever and steam has forgotten my details and forces me to log in manually, ok whatever I don't mind

steam client updates it's self but no other updates come in, well I had updated it recently before I stopped playing it last so maybe im already up to date

I click play

"This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time."

what the hell does that even mean ? a game on my hard drive is unavailable for what reason ? its right there on my drive, I paid full day 1 retail price why can't I just play my game ?

you know what the pirates did ? no logging on, no waiting, no problems just launched and played see the problem ? why must companys copnstantly force PAYING customers to jump through unnessesary hoops like this crap? /stress /rage

gamesas please make a patch to remove the unnessesary drm you have made your moneys worth by now for sure

but In the mean time anyone have any suggestions to get this game working again? I have manually changed nothing since the last time I played and it was working fine ...

Thanks

Launch the game with SKSE installed and a shortcut to skse_loader.exe (in your skyrim folder). Bypasses the Steam launcher.

Usually "this game is not available" means it's downloading a patch.

You may also need to restart the Steam client as something may be messed up. This could indicate that the Steam client is checking for updates (to the Steam client, not Skyrim) or other such things.

after deleting ClientRegistry.blob / cache things and restarting steam it made steam to do a skyrim update (it had not been previously updating)

and stay calm

I do try but can't help but get passionate about drm.

It works now thanks

SKSE is something I will look into as I do not need steam

I never understood why Bethesda decided to work with valve? They had a good thing going on there own. now not only is the community upset because of issues caused by steam but when there are issues with the game they only thing you can do is complain in forums until they fix it. we are no longer able to get previous updates to the game because steam is the only way to get updates and they only allow you to get the most recent one. this was a horrible choice on bethesda. and if they want me to look at there games as a possable purchase in the future steam will be the deciding factor. if the game says steam required I will never buy the game.

if I buy a game from steam then I expect it to use the steam client even as a single player but when I buy from a store not so much but im not really here to argue steam if someone wants to use it then it should be their choice I would just apriciate the choice to have to use it.

anyway back on top my reason for returning to this post Is I am trying to get Skse to work I checked the documentation I have the correct version but running skse just loads steam login and skyrim launcher as normal and starts the game without the script extender features, anyone have any suggestions ?

(and yeah I am willing to jump through hoops so I don't have to jump through different hoops  )

This is normal. SKSE doesn't allow you to bypass the Steam requirement. Steam must be running (in online or offline mode) when you launch skse_loader.exe. If it isn't, it will be loaded and as you said, the launcher will come up. If you run skse_loader.exe when the Steam client is already running, the game will launch without the launcher appearing.

Kilyin said it bypassed the steam launcher I assumed that would mean it would work without steam but I guess he means it just gives an additional way to launch it with steam

thanks anyway

+1 totally agree, DRM never ever ever bothers the pirates and is always always always 'removed' within hours, Why can Bethesda not see that being forced to use Steam is such a big issue for so many people?

I'll probably get warned/banned for this but i'm gonna say it anyway.

I bought the retail PC version (From a shop, have a receipt to prove it)....Do i use Steam............NO, it's not even installed on my PC and yes you can get the updates without Steam.

And before anybody calls me a pirate..NO i am NOT....i BOUGHT the game, i just refuse to be forced to use Steam and you know what???? all the countless post i see here from people having endless issues caused by Steam (not even letting them play a game they bought) i just lol as i launch and play, issue free.

Knowingly or not, Kilyin misspoke. It bypasses the Skyrim launcher. It will not bypass the Steam requirement.

Yeah that's what I meant, sorry for any confusion. I guess that wouldn't bypass the 'game unavailable' issue but I've never run into that before.

Generally, the fix is to delete ClientRegistry.blob or rename it and let Steam generate a new one: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4595-wexn-6831
This is not a Skyrim issue, I can tell you that much.

Also, keep the Steam DRM discussion out of here. It doesn't belong. I'd provide the proper link in CD, but I can't make heads or tails of the threads with them all being ponified today...

Of course it belongs, it's what the thread is about.

No it doesn't. A specific thread was created in CD to keep things from getting out of hand.

I think that's the thread.

As this is not a Skyrim technical issue, but a problem with your Steam client, please use the Steam discussion topic linked above if you would like to discuss further.

In case you need additional help to resolve the issue, you might also want to use Steam's support service (go to https://support.steampowered.com/kb_cat.php?id=3 and click on Contact Support )
