Skyrim doesn't use ini files after patching

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 2:49 pm

After I updated Skyrim from version 1.2 to 1.5 it stopped using the normal ini files (Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini) and Saves-folder located in C:User name\Documents\My Games\ Skyrim. This caused all sorts of weird effects, e.g. the game starts in a small window, there's no music in the main menu and the framerate has decreased considerably. The patch works perfectly with my other computer so I know this problem has something to do with this computer being improperly configured. I've already tried reinstalling both Steam and Skyrim, running as administrator and using the newest graphics card drivers, but none of these fixes helped. I'd like to hear if someone else has already encountered this problem and possibly fixed it.

EDIT: I have the same problem as this guy: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/480168-my-gamesskyrimskyrimprefsini-doesnt-have-any-effect/
The music in the main menu is actually playing just fine but the other issues still persist.

Have you tried deleting the INI files?

Thanks for the reply. Deleting the ini files didn't unfortunately solve the problem: the launcher created new ini files, but the game doesn't use them. I know this because in the SkyrimPrefs.ini-file I have these lines:

bFull Screen=1
iSize H=1050
iSize W=1680

and the game still starts in a small window which takes up about a quarter of my screen.

Ok, go into your Data folder and see if there are any INI files in there:

Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/Data

Nope, there aren't any ini files in Data folder, just Video-,Interface- and Strings-folder, Skyrim.esm and Update.esm and some bsa files. I have two ini files in \SteamApps\common\Skyrim, though: Skyrim_default.ini file in Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim and SkyrimPrefs.ini file in Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\Skyrim.

Those are the templates/defaults. Have you tried verifying the game files by going to the "Library" tab in Steam, right-clicking Skyrim, clicking Properties, "Local Content", Verify?

Yeah, I know you've reinstalled already, but it's worth a shot.

I clicked the setting "Verify Integrity of Game Cache", but it didn't help. I think the problem is because I have poorly configured Windows settings – I'll try reinstalling the OS and see what happens.
