Bought a HD 7970, recorded some footage

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 3:33 pm

I have sold my two HD 5870's (noise and heat) and decided to get the HD 7970. I have tried maxing out the game and recording footage and it is pretty hard getting it below 60fps, so here is the footage folks, I hope you like it.

PS. If somebody can tell me how to embed on here I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Yeah, I upgraded from my 6970 the day the 7970 came out. So worth it for ultra high resolutions. At 1920x1080 a 6970 does fine, but for some games at 5760x1080 the extra GPU power helps. Skyrim really isnt that graphically intense though, even with HD textures.

What fps do you get with a 7970 with supersample AA checked in CCC (and 8x AA checked in Skyrim)? With my 6970 2gb I get 60fps with 8x MSAA but only 25fps with 8x SSAA....wonder if upgrading to 7970 would make a difference...

No offense, but, on what difficulty are you playing? That guy is an a-hole, and it took me spamming Paralyze and 850 damage dual-cast Incinerate, 5 Whiterun guards, 2 Dremora Lords, and a dual-wielding Dark Brotherhood Initiate to take him down. Any of the Villians, really. It's a joke.

Aye, I would agree there. Which is why I am going to try and get my hand on the latest Project: CARS alpha build tonight to see what she can really do.

I haven't tried SSAA, because I got horribly low FPS with the 5870's in Crossfire. So my assumption was that SSAA was basically a screenshot tool to make snapshots look insane. I will give it a go tonight and let you know mate.

If I am honest, it is at default level which I think is Adept.

Thanks!

I tell you what, I will post the screenshots here as well for you. I am not entirely sure if they will look any better than the HD6xxxx series because I have never seen the Catalyst software for that, but I noticed the AA and AF settings had a new level to scale up to:

2x, 2x EX, 4x, 4x EX, 6x, 6x EX, 8x, 8x EX.... 16x, 16x EX.

Never heard of the EX settings on the Catalyst slider, I have no idea if they are an even higher setting or if 8x and 8x EX apply the same level but leaves some alogithms out. As in, it hides things you wouldn't have noticed in real time gameplay just so it can do it faster, but might notice in screenshots because you can study the picture. We'll find out later I suppose.

Thanks!

I was running on Super Sampling AA last night mate, and this was with everything else in Catalyst set to maximum as well. To my shock the game was steady at 60fps. I lock it to that because I run on a HDTV, there were a couple of fights where it dropped to about 30fps but the rest of the time the card just blasted through everything. I was expecting bad performance lower than 20fps, but I was really impressed. to make things better, the card remained fairly silent throughout and when I checked the temperature of the card it didn't appear to rise above 60 celcius. The 5870's would reach about 80 celcius on occassion with just Multi-Sample AA so AMD appear to have done a spectacular job with this one.

EDIT: I also took a risk and increased uGrids to 11 in the skyrim.ini file (or skyrimprefs.ini... can't remember which) and the game was very stable. I could only manage uGrids 7 before, so the extra memory on the card has made a massive impact in gameplay stability at high graphical level.... I didn't get a single crash all night and that is with sprinting through the cells on the map to try and fill the buffer. Bear in mind this is with modded texture packs and Vurt's Flora Overhaul, I have no idea how much memory it was using in the card, just happy it didn't breach 3GB during the stress test and thus didn't CTD.

I recommend this card highly if you are looking for a new one. It can handle whatever you throw at it.

Wow! Thanks for the update.

So that extra gig of VRam must be making the difference to the SSAA - I found http://www.hwcompare.com/11313/radeon-hd-6970-vs-radeon-hd-7970/ as a comparison between our cards (although mine is a later manufacturer-enhanced model with core clock speed of 940mhz and memory clock of 1425mhz which is faster than the default on your card - unless yours is also enhanced).

That's interesting, and more so about the Pixel Rate. The 6970 can still hold it's own in that department! :)

I personally think the Legacy setting works best for my monitor, but if you try them all, I think you'll have to uninstall & reinstall each time you want to try a different preset, if you get the auto installer file. Either way, this is the best lighting mod I've found.

Thats alot like the Realistic Lighting one then, I am using it now and you have to reinstall to try the different settings. I am going to finish trying all of those out and then give this one a go as well, I love these lighting mods... the game is so much better when a torch becomes an essential 'don't leave home without one' kind of item. They make dungeons and caves a whole new ball game. :)
