Outdoor CTDs when RAM reaches 1.8GB

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:48 am

Hey there, I'm starting to get frustrated with my Skyrim install. Whenever I'm outdoors, if at any time the process reaches 1.8GB of RAM in the Task Manager, the game instantly CTD's. I thought that patch 1.3 fixed that?

I know that if I turn down my Ugrids setting to the default value that it gives the RAM a little more headroom before crashing (about 30 minutes into gameplay), but I'd rather just remedy the issue instead of putting a band-aid on it. I'm running an i7 2600k 4.5Ghz, EVGA GTX 680, 2x4GB 1600Mhz RAM, Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, and Crucial M4 64GB. My system obviously meets the specs for the game, but I don't understand why the game is limiting itself to 1.8GB of RAM. It's really bugging me. I've tried the iPreloadSizeLimit, iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes, and iMinMemoryPageSize tweaks. No dice on them.

I'm also running v1.4.27 as well because v1.5.X is waaay too buggy at the moment and breaks too many of my mods.

So is there anything in these logs that you see that would cause my game to not use 1.8GB+?

Did you use a ini generator like DNA? Try running default ini's with the same ugrids setting to see if its something in the ini's.

Maybe your overclocking? Try w/o.

Did you roll back from 1.5.X to 1.4? Could be a dirty roll-back.

In any case, i cant see anything wrong with your settings. If its closing at 1.8GB DRAM it sounds almost like the LAA flag has been removed from TESV.exe. I know 1.4 should still have the flag so its a little weird. Maybe a long shot but try downloading a LAA patcher tool and re-applying the LAA flag.

And just to be clear, your talking about DRAM, not your GTX680 VRAM amount. Cause if its VRAM and your hitting 1.8GB out of 2GB, then you might need to drop some graphics setting like screen resolution, ugrids, hi-res textures etc.

Finally, no mods? Usually the most likely explanation.

@modinn: do you have a skyrim4GB file in your My Games Skyrim directory? I do, and it says this:

Loader: Error - Unable to successfully set LAA flag

So I'm wondering whether my ctd issues may also be caused by a failure of the game to address 4GB RAM...

Skyrim is already LAA.

Yes, I know that it should be... the point is that 'Skyrim 4GB' text file in the My Games directory (my documents). I'm just wondering whether mine is not using LAA for some reason, or if I still have some residue of the old LAA patch somewhere (in spite of a complete reinstall) which might be conflicting. Not entirely sure I should have that file - do you B1gBadDaddy? Or anyone else? Could be a sign something's up with mine if not.

I don't have that file mate. I think you have something left over from LAA mod. Skyrim exe is LAA as standard now, so wouldn't have any errors like that.

Ok thanks - I'll look into that...

Edit: Was just a leftover txt file dated December, don't think the LAA patch can still be active or in place since I reinstalled at least twice since then.

Remove the 4GB launcher, it is no longer required. Also, your CPU is overclocked and you are experiencing crashes. Returning to stock speeds should be one of your first troubleshooting steps.

Do not use an entire DNA config AT ALL....if you find something you want to change use the generator and add the lines into your own ini.

Assuming that isn't the case I would say that either way like others above said remove that LAA.....personally I would backup my saves and dump everything skyrim related from my HDD and reinstall(and thus why I don't run Skyrim or other crap DRM tied games off an SSD). 5 Reinstalls for 5 patches never a problem but damn the read write would have eaten an SSD.

Not using a DNA config anymore. I had in the past and it crashes and bugged out way too much for my taste. I only make changes to the INI that Nvidia had in their Tweak guide (and I don't tweak all the variables in there either).

I don't think that my Skyrim.exe has had the LAA flag turned on. If it has then I'm screwed as it's my only copy of v1.4.27 I have. I've always backed up my saves several times to my HDD for safe keeping. But don't go as far to say that the amount of reads and writes in installing mods/Skyrim would eat an SSD. Especially on a Crucial M4, because that's just untrue. My SSD is showing 99% health in HD Tune 2.55 and SSDLIfe Pro 2.2.42 and I've had it for at least 8 months now. If you have a Sandforce based SSD, then I would agree with you as they are awful in reliability. Reads will not degrade an SSD much. Writes are what degrade an SSD because of the NAND chips having a finite number of write cycles in their lifetime. Just a tidbit for you  If you really want to cut down on the amount of writes on an SSD if it is your OS drive, then read this guide http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds.

Still testing, no luck yet. Will report back. I may end up doing a reinstall of mods and game if all else fails.

Ah you are trying to avoid 1.5.....can't say I have had any issues with it myself but they are def floating around. I would think that 680 would handle fine in 1.5 but can't say for sure......my 6970 which is a good notch under that card (or two since it is ATI) had no issues.

I upgraded from a MSI 6970 watercooled@ 1000/1500. A pretty noticable difference I'll admit, I've always been an AMD guy too (first Nvidia card actually). I'm quite impressed by the performance it brings, and the fact that I can get >30 fps with my config and ENB SSAO (or driver SSAO for that matter) is definitely a win in my book :) Otherwise I would've gone with the 7970. But yeah, I'm avoiding 1.5 like the plague due to Navmesh issues with some of my mods and incompabilities with a lot of other mods.

Smart move mod heavy games suffer from the 1.5 patch(which was to be expected and thus I can see you know the trends)...I prefer Nvidia but I really can't say this card is terrible just prefers to be quiet over cool which I solved manually. The navmesh issue is being addressed if that brings any sunshine to your day.

So I solved my issue. Apparently it had to do with ENBInjector.exe. I switched back to the d3d9.dll wrapper and all the problems went away. Kind of weird how it happened, but now my config is reaching 2.1GB during gameplay with no crashing. Thanks for the help everyone!

NP glad you got it sorted.....I don't use ENB not against it just waiting for all these patches to end before I go nuts.
