Concerned With Power Brick...

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 8:40 pm

I know from reading elsewhere that Asus brand laptops tend to have issues with overheating. However, it isn't the os that I'm concerned about, but the power brick that accompanies my G73Jh model. My laptop is a year and a half old at the most; the laptop itself doesn't get too hot; on the other hand, my power brick heats up like a furnace. The other day, I set my laptop down on my bed to go and fetch a snack. I paused Skyrim by going to my character's inventory, left for no more than a minute, and returned to a computer that had turned itself off. This has happened a few times before, but it doesn't always happen when I set my laptop down.

I have the habit of not keeping my laptop battery in when I play Skyrim (my previous Asus os fried its motherboard due to the battery constantly charging).

**Is there anything I can use to cool off the power brick?

Do you think this is a laptop issue or has my power brick decided to cook itself??
(If I let the power brick sit overnight to cool off, it works just fine when I turn my laptop on)

Buy a small fan and point at it? There's really nothing else you can do. If it's overheating frequently, it'd probably be best to get another.

Was the laptop elevated at all? Putting an already hot laptop on a cushy, heat-absorbing surface that it can then promptly sink into is a recipe for plugged vents and an overheating disaster. Don't do that. I have a suspicion that, if your laptop was already running rather hot due to gaming activity, blocking its exhaust/intake vents by putting it on the bed may have pushed it over the edge and prompted a shut down to cool off / save itself.

As for the power brick...I remember mine on my old gaming laptop I had 3+ years ago getting very hot indeed, just because of the amount of power it was drawing. As in you couldn't rest your foot on it for very long lest you get burned. Despite the brick being hot, however, the laptop itself was fine: no overheating (I kept it elevated and well-ventilated besides). Unless you're resting your brick under your laptop (which you shouldn't do), it shouldn't cause any overheating in the laptop itself.

Now, it's possible the brick itself is starting to give out and I suppose it could overheat and, since you don't have the battery in, if it goes out or falters that would cause your laptop to shut off. Do you have a spare adapter you could try? That's the easiest way to figure out if it's an issue with your adapter/power or your laptop itself.

Given that people are replying to this topic, and that Shademyth's already edited the text out of his posts in the other thread rather than this one, I think it makes more sense that that thread should be locked--even if it was created first.

Ya makes more sense I guess little to no experience gaming on a laptop but I was pointing out in the other thread that it seems the warranty for the battery pack was less than the system which is normally a sign that they know its crapola. As far as the power brick idk laptops get hot gaming so it is quite possible that what Tyraa said above occured.

A spare adapter? I only have the one power brick that came with my laptop. What you have said about laying the laptop on my bed makes sense; however, there was another incident when it shut itself off when I had it resting on my kitchen table. I use a power strip to plug in the charger, instead of plugging the brick directly into the wall ( apparently it's bad to plug laptops in the wall socket). Would a new power brick be expensive/ possible to buy??

I generally have the laptop resting in my lap (I sit "indian" style because that is more comfortable for me). The bottom of my laptop never gets very hot, but the vents in the back blow out a ton of heat. Is there a method I could use to check the conditions of my fans? I did a cleaning of the vents not too long ago, but I still want to check to see that the fans are doing okay.

The charger/power brick is not designed to operate at 100% for long peroids, charge the battery then float charge... If you are gaming then yes it will heat up just like your CPU, video card, etc.

Float charge? You mean for me to unplug the charger and just run on my laptop's battery..? My computer doesn't last long when it's not plugged in, even when I have the battery set to "reserve" mode. Skyrim drains the battery pretty fast because it demands so much to run.

No, you misunderstood. when you plug your laptop in and it charges thats fine. When the battery gets to 100% the output of the charger changes so it puts out less charge, just enough to maintain battery at 100%. That is the normal way of charging. But what iam saying is that the reason your brick is getting very hot is because it is always putting out 100% because while gaming the computer is using alot more electricity and that chargers are designed to charge then rest (float charge).
