Anybody underwhelmed with their unique quest rewards?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:57 pm

Last night I did the quest involving Hircine's Ring. I opted to kill the werewolf. I didn't really want to because he seemed very sorry for what happened, but it's best not to piss off Daedric princes. Plus there was that whole thing of "stealing" the ring from Hircine in the first place, so he kind of brought everything on himself on that front.

Anyway. Now I have a Savior's Hide. And I'm... underwhelmed. It's not very good armor; in fact there are many non-unique light armor pieces that offers more protection. Nor is the enchantment all that useful. 15% resistance to magic, yay? 15% is nothing. And 50% immunity to poison, considering that the Falmer and their pets are really the only ones that actually USE poison is just a "yeah whatever" feature. Frankly, when Hircine itself says
My glories shall protect you from all of this world's greivances
...I kind of expected more.

I'm wondering if there are other players who went through the hassle of earning a unique quest reward and once they actually got it, found it to be very disappointing. :(

I craft almost all of my own supplies and prefer doing it that way. It's amazing how far into the game you can get with a self-made, improved and self-enchanted Skyforge Steel axe. I'm completing quests and being handed weapons and armor that aren't nearly as good as what I make myself.

I sort of felt that way in Oblivion too, but to a lesser degree obviously since you can't make or improve anything yourself. (The level scaling of items was more of the problem there...)

Morrowind was really the last time I felt like the uber-gear was worthwhile, so count me as agreeing with you.

Agree totally.

To be honest I only do quests for the fun of them, for the experience. 90% of the time, the unique weapon/armour reward goes straight into my chest at home. I've been using legendary steel armour from about level 10 and I'm now level 57 and it's suiting me just fine.

That said, The Ring of Hircine is actually quite useful for players who want to change into beast form more often. I think the Staff of Magnus was very underwhelming for the amount of effort required to get it, however.

It seems to me that Skyrim allows more freedom with giving players the opportunity to put aesthetics before stats. Even though I have a full set of Ebony, I actually prefer wearing steel. The stat differences are almost negligible. But when it come to legendary unique items, they should never be weaker than what we already have.

Yeah, just about every unique item in this game svcks completely. I really don't know why Bethesda dropped the ball on this. These are supposed to be the elder artifacts of Tamriel, but even random loot in bandit lairs is better than this crap.

In previous games, the artifacts were...well...useful. And powerful. Maybe the devs took people's complaints about stuff being OP too far and completely nerfed everything...

Yeah, aesthetics are nice. I wore some upgraded leather armor for a while just because I liked the way it looked. (The character I was using wasn't exactly built for melee anyway, so wearing better armor probably wouldn't have helped much against an angry Orc Bandit Chief....)

But when it comes to unique legendary equipment, they should be above and beyond what you can get or make yourself. It should automatically be better than the highest quality craftable equipment with some epic, possibly even unique, enchantments.

I think my two favorite "unique" pieces are the Ebony Blade and the Dragon Priest Masks. (Krosis!!)

i actually treat my unique items as collections. XD i dont bring them with me as i leave them in my house together with my other collections =) but yeah, if there was a way to get more display cases and mannequins for your collections that'd be great.. add it in the next patches or maybe even DLC? =) please and thank you!

Agreed. Breezehome for instance has those woven....dreamcatcher?....things all over the walls where there totally could be weapon plaques.

If you're on PC, there will be a mod to fix it , which will be nice.

One problem I've noticed though is that Daedric artifacts just WILL NOT stay on the weapon plaques/racks. I set them there, leave, and then the next time I enter, they're on the floor......grumble....

There are some nice ones but most are not very useful.
The fact that the tradeskills allow you to create items that are considerably better makes most of these unique Daedric items look silly.

I have to agree with you also, even the items given out as quest rewards are supposed to be level so if I finish a quest later on in the game why am I still getting a steal or iron sword as a reward for it and I am not talking about basic quests Thane of Solitude cant be done at low levels with out exploits as one just doesnt have the coin to do it not to mention the quests are a bit hard for a lower level character. So shouldnt I when completing this quest get a leveled sword appropriate to my level like at least a ebony sword or glass.

The Daedric artifacts with the exception of 3 maybe 4 really need to be looked at for a stat boost

Skyrim is all about choices and the "obvious" shades of grey in the path you chose. Then again, this may be one of numerous cases in which it is not....

Perhaps your conservatisim in this case backfired? Perhaps your assumption you would obtain a unique quest reward by playing it safe via the "obvious" choice (i.e. wisely choosing not to "piss off the Daedric Princes") wasn't the best choice in the long run?

Perhaps committing the justified murder of what you considered a "guilty" werewolf, may have reaped you an equivalently justifiable reward---one that is seemingly underwhelming. Did you ever consider the alternative hypothesis? What would happen if you had opted to commit blasphemy and sided with the werewolf against an indifferent Daedric Prince.......? Well at least you've got a previous savegame.....right?

I'm a big fan of the Masque of Clavicus Vile, Spellbreaker, and Dawnbreaker.

I'm especially fond of Spellbreaker since it can be upgraded with smithing. Can't seem to upgrade Ysgamor's Shield, which is the only other visually unique shield I know about.

I hope that they will get rid of "leveled loot " in their next TES game , it's not good because now , before the player enters a dungeon , he knows he'll find a mediocre item at best which ruins the feeling of being well rewarded after a long and hard dungeon .

Rewarding the player with powerful items is one of the things that keeps your motivation of doing more exploration , my opinion is that the leveled looting system seriously harms that . Maybe they should have toned down the power of the items the player can make (nerfed smithing mainly ) but on the other hand , made unique objects that are difficult to get , much more powerful . I mean most of those objects are legendary and made by Gods , it makes sense that the player can equal them when crafting , but not make them look ridiculous , well just my opinion

I felt the same way about Balor's Oath Blade. On my first run through I found it at about level 25, and it was already useless. I went to get it early on my second run through, upgraded it, and used it until about level 20 when I found a better blade in a chest on one of the dragon shrines. They (Deadric artifacts) seem to be the only thing that doesn't level with you, so they will be my first set of quests on my next run through. Mehrunes Dagger is the only one I found use for later int he game, and I still used it off-hand, just for the potential instant kill...

Unfortunately, they have level limits. For example, you have to be level 20 to get Dagon's quest. I found that out the hard way when I started my assassin/thief character...the Razor was the firsr thing I tried to go get only to find out about the level limit. Grumble.....

Not sure if this relates but I'm doing some quests for Ulfric Stormcloak and we just liberated The Reach. I ran all over the place, tower to tower, pillaging Imperial Camps, and his reward for all that: a Hide Shield.

With how quickly we level through the early part of the game, as long as you make the dagger among the last, you should be 20 by the time you go for it. I ran into Sam for the Sanguine rose at level 5 when i first got to whiterun. He was sitting at the bar talking to geezer grey mane. I didn't go for it then because it would have meant fighting a giant for the goat... at level 5..... I waited a bit. Nice to find him early so I knew where to find him later though....

Oh, it relates. That is a disappointing quest reward, lol.

He gave me his sword after the battle of Solitude. A one handed steel sword with a weak enchantment. For helping him conquer Skyrim.

..thanks?

The only thing I don't like about Ebony Mail, is that it turns my enemies pitch black in color.

It isn't very aesthetically pleasing when they look exactly like me when I am fighting them.

I hope that it is just a bug and will be patched.
