I just sent this email to Bethesda

Posting it here for a few reasons. 1 is that I have been talking to a lot of people over on the nexus forums and the concensus is that patch 1.5 breaks a lot of vanilla cells. 2 is that I outlined what I have done and when and where the problems have started, and I would like to know if anyone on this board may have a clue as to what exactly is going on. So here it is. Read below:

Hey Bethesda,

just wanted to tell you that for the first time since buying skyrim on 11-11-11 I have found a gamebreaking bug that I cannot fix myself and has completely stopped me from being able to play the game.

At the beginning of the game the player must go to whiterun to alert eh yarl of the dragon attacks on helghen.

Problem is with no mods installed and after several fresh installs the game crashes very often in whiterun. But this I could sort of deal with because it seems about 15% of the time (thanks for that by the way) I can get past the crashing and actually arrive at dragonsreach.

But at dragonsreach I cannot get in. The game crashes 100% of the time when I try an enter. Its impossible. And it happens with NO MODS INSTALLED.

I don't understand why you or steam decided it was a good idea to make it so people cannot roll back to 1.4.

But anger aside I will tell you about my computer so maybe if you choose to actually help one of your customers (who has been buying your games and loving them since 2003) then here it is.

Windows 7 64 bit

i5 2500K @ 4.3ghz stable (prime 95 for 24 hours)

corsair vengeance 8gb @ 1600mhz

Silencer mk II 950 watt

MSI 6950 2gb in crossfire

1tb HDD 7200RPM Hitachi

Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen 3

All updated drivers.

Now the only reason I post that is because before I had intel my computer was on an AMD 1100T and gigabyte 990FX motherboard. I recently switched over to Intel and wiped my HDD (Or I think I did) by writing the OS over everything on it from AMD. Effectively placing the OS over it all and erasing whats left. I play a lot of games on my computer through steam and so naturally I installed a few and they ran fine. Skyrim is the only one with a problem.

Funniest thing to me is before I switched to Intel I was subscribed to the 1.5 beta on my AMD machine. Skyrim played fine there. Bad performance compared to my intel CPU but at least there were no game breaking glitches.

So I am begging you, or anyone who cares at Bethesda. I love skyrim and would like it to work. I have done everything I can, and tried everything no matter how vague or unrelated a fix it may seem, and gotten nowhere. I literally cannot play the game because of this, because I cannot advance the main quest.

I have temporarily gotten into Dragonsreach by verifying skyrim cache files through steam. No idea why that would allow me to enter but it does. Then what happens is I cannot get out unless I type "coc whiterun" in console. And I should note that any type of save in dragonsreach cannot be loaded.

Also I temporarily fixed the crashing in whiteruns overall cell by deleting everything my steam folder except steamapps, userdata and the steam application. Then I launched the steam app and let it update and when I went back in to play it worked for a while. Not dragonsreach but the whiterun cell outside it. Just so we are clear.

Then after restarting my computer the crashing in whiterun itself was back. I should note again that for whiterun it only crashes when I get half way through the town. There is a point (like someone drew a line down the center) that from any direction if I cross it the game will crash. No explanation for that..

So please, I only took the time to write this because I love the game so much and cannot fix it myself. I have put (shamefully) 231 hours into the game since its release and its only now on my new intel system that I have problems with it. And only problems with skyrim. :(

Love,

Dan

You mentioned that this was happening with no mods installed.

Keep in mind quite a few mods that contain scripts can continue to affect your save game even after you uninstall or delete the mod, as the scripts are not stored in the mod file.

Have you tried testing this Dragonreach problem using a clean savegame (for example from Helgen), that never had any mods? You may also want to try verify integrity of local game cache.

But yes clean save, clean install etc. No script files installed from mods, no mods period.
