Can you run this well on a single core processor?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 12:47 pm

So I just got this game, and right now I'm running it on a garbage computer but it runs. What I'm asking that if I upgrade my computer to using 4gig RAM and a Sapphire Radeon HD6770 but I'm still only gonna be using a single core processor. Will the framerate still be garbage or will it be better?

The minimum specs for Skyrim are as follows:
  • Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
  • Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
  • 2GB System RAM
  • 6GB free HDD Space
  • Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
  • DirectX compatible sound card
  • Internet access for Steam activation
I'm guessing that you're CPU is a Pentium 4, so it should be pretty fast for a single core, but old. Overall, you will not get much (If any) better FPS with that single core. You should invest in a new CPU above anything else. Preferably one of the new Ivy Bridge quad core CPUs.

I'm using an old dimension 5100 computer, my motherboard can't even handle a dual core processor

Then, no, it won't run too well if it runs at all.

I figured. You'd need to get a new mobo and probably a new case to go with it if you want any more than mediocre performance.

You see, without a good CPU even the most powerful of GPUs will be useless as the CPU will be acting as a bottleneck, keeping you from using the full power of the card. Same goes for RAM. And if you don't have a 64 bit OS you can't really use more than 3.5 GB of RAM anyway.

And probably a new PSU. In essence, a new computer.

a 6770 will just cause your CPU to bottleneck, you'll likely gain very little if any FPS.

Yeah, pretty much. And a new OS too, as the one on the PC, if original, is likely to be an OEM.

Yep defo need a new pc dude. I was on probably the exact same machine a year ago. Saved a bit, and built my rig.

You'll need a new psu, motherboard, CPU, graphics card, new ram to work with your new mb, and probably a new case because you'll need good space and fans for the hardware as these days things get heated with the power our machines have.

So basically a new pc :)

Cases are optional. :P

I seriously need to build a submerged system one of these days... >_>

Hot glue it all to a piece of styrofoam and put it in the tub.

That'd require a lot of non-conductive liquid >_>

I'd like something like a fish-tank. A large one with transparent sides and lights in it. Now that's what I'd like to build.

Been a dream of mine for a good 5+ years. Just don't have the cash for it, sadly. :(

Ha may be optional, but my current hardware would not have fitted in my old pc case, mainly the size of my card lol :P
