Graphical Shadow Problem

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 2:56 pm

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some problems with Skyrim's shadows for the last couple of days and it just happened randomly, before the shadows were perfectly fine and I've been running all of the settings on max. I've checked literally all of the little tweaks a lot of other sites are saying in the SkyrimPref.ini files for shadows but none of them are working.

I'm getting the awful jaggered shadows a lot of other people experienced which most of them solved by using those tweaks I've already read but I'm also having some other issues, the shadowing on the player character like on his face and armour are all glitchy also and they keep stuttering, it's as if time speeds up every now and then and the shadows just totally spaz out or something and it's very off-putting for me playing.

I uninstalled Skyrim and deleted every single mod and currently I'm running Skyrim with no other mods and it still has this issue.

The graphic card I'm using is an ENGTX560 Ti DCII/2DI/1GD5 and literally Skyrim was running perfectly fine until a couple of days ago with all settings maxed out. I did however recently get an update for my driver via NVIDIA Control Panel which was ver 296.10 but before that I was using the one I updated it via the ASUS website which was an older driver which is why the NVIDIA CP told me there was an update available, and I have tried reinstalling that older driver and testing Skyrim but it did not fix anything.

Currently I have not edited anything in Skyrim's .ini files so I'm willing to try anything anyone suggests that may help my shadows work correctly. I could get screenshots of the problem is anyone would think that would help them determine the problem.

Thank you for your time

P.S
Everything else in Skyrim is totally fine, graphics, gameplay, fps, the only issue here is the pixelated shadowing and how it just looks awful on my character and other NPCs and the way they spaz out, it really makes the game hard to enjoy for me at the moment.

I noticed another issue as I just left Whiterun today, it seems the shadow even on the buildings are bugged for me now, take a look at these two screenshots I took and keep flicking through them both, it's getting these awful rectangular shadows on the buildings that was really bugging me because it was just terrible. I can't play Skyrim right now because of it.

Not sure about the rest of your problems, but to get rid of the shadow banding, just set fShadowBiasScale in your SkyrimPrefs.ini to anything greater than 1.0000. I use 2.0000 myself and it's gotten rid of the problem entirely, although it will pixelate shadows a bit and cause "floating" shadows if you go as high as, say, 4.0000.

Thank you for the fix that helped fix that issue! :D

I've also noticed some other graphical issues I'm having now which only started to happen recently. The fire pits when you look at them directly, they have a blur kind of effect because of the fire and what not but I can see this blur effect through walls, there is definitely something wrong there and does anyone know why it could be doing this?

I also noticed that a part of the mountains in the distance from Whiterun keep stuttering if I look at it and move, that shouldn't be happening neither, does anyone know what could be causing these issues for me?

Thanks again

That sounds like z-fighting and in that case, well, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1336456-mountain-flicker-z-fighting/ It's been reported on AMD and nVidia cards, across multiple driver versions. It's a bug in the game engine (and one that popped up in New Vegas as well, IIRC), and one Bethesda is probably going to have to fix themselves.

Ahh I see thank you for letting me know! I hope in a future patch that issue might be fixed then. ^_^
