Dark Brotherhood worth the effort?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:04 am

My latest character has been an attempt to include my gf in the Skyrim experience. She enjoys watching me play these longer games, and so I try to let her make some of the decisions along the way. The Dark Brotherhood is a strange situation, really. From past experience with DB questlines, I'm assuming you have 3 options:
  • Destroy the DB
  • Ignore the DB
  • Join the DB, nearly wipe it out, then eventually save it.
Is the questline interesting enough to be worth the effort? GF would prefer I kill them all, since I'm already playing a mostly good character... but I haven't played the DB questline yet, and this is likely my last character until the CK comes out.

On a side note, if there any way to get the Backstab enchantment available for custom enchanting? It appears you can't disenchant any of the DB gear.

You'll get an unvincible horse as a quest reward which can easily tank a dragon.
You get to kill the Emperor when you join them. Dunno what happens when you kill them, the horse is too much of a bonus that I never chose that.

Backstab enchant -> not that I know of.

As for DB, it's fun. You get a nice sum of money for killing off the DB, but you get over 6x the amount for completing the guild. Can also upgrade the guild after you complete everything, although I hadn't explored that yet since I made new characters.

Killing the DB is simple. Kill Astrid, then talk to a couple guards, then Kill everyone else, then get paid. The End. I'm just curious if the other option is actually an interesting story... interesting enough to defy the gf and join the DB anyway. :-p

Killing the DB is NOT simple, at a low level anyways. I killed Astrid at level 25 and I barely made it out alive (and I was playing adept with a heavy armor warrior).

Ahh. I'm level 39, and a Mage. Paralyze + Firebolt wins everything. But point taken.

It's worth the effort if you want to see a guy pinned to a tree from 20 arrows.

That whole part of the questline was really dark and violent.

Definitely worth playing the guild line, you get the best horse in the history of TES, a really cool summon spell, one of the best armor sets in the game, a lot of gold, and a base that you can call home at the end.

If you work with the Dark Brotherhood, after the quest line completes, you can keep going back to the Night Mother for more contracts. The payout is leveled gold, before I deleted my last character I was pulling in 1200 gold per hit, ad it's an infinite number of revolving contracts. If nothing else, it works as a bank. I personally, thought that it was a great storyline, and I almost always play as an Assassin character. In Morrowind I ruled in the Morag Tong, and frankly this is one of the best "Assassin" story lines yet.

Definitely well worth it to be evil for a bit. The DB rules.

Rewards aside, it is a pretty interesting storyline with no annoying radiant quests, until you complete it all.

e: And you get to meet Samuel L. Jackson!

I assume you mean a lookalike. I didn't think he was a voice in this game.

loved the DB storyline. Some of the best armor peices: gloves that help backstab, boots that are muffled.

the armor looked great on my girly character, it showed off her thighs. I had a good time killing everybody.

Not to mention that you get to murder a high profile VIP and you'll get to hug your mother. :)

Quite possibly the best reward in the entire game comes upon your initiation: a set of gloves that gives you a 2x backstab bonus. This means 30x base damage with the dagger perk in the sneak tree, and will allow you to kill practically any opponent with one sneak attack (even on master) by the end of the game, with a well forged dagger. As far as the quests go, I thought they were some of the most interesting and enjoyable ones in the game. Definitely different, which was nice. Not the typical "I forgot my magical trousers at the bottom of a crypt full of draugr." Even the side assassinations are fun. Definitely go for it, but remember it is best enjoyed with a character tailored specially for the role, in skills and more importantly in mentality. Playing the twisted assassin is a load of fun.
