Help in buying house in Markarth

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:50 pm

Help ??

Looking for the Jarls quarters, and/ or the Steward to buy Vlindrel Hall. I've helped 4/5 people (cant find another person to help).

Everyone in the Treasury is dead from other quest of finding information about Forsworn and bringing it to the guy who was later murdered by soldiers. Does this affect my finding the Jarl? I have a bounty of 40 in Markarth.

I really want to buy this house. I saw the youTube clip, very nice. Working towards being Thane of all the Holds. ;)

Where do you go to clear the bounty? Mine's 1000 coin in total. Just started Thieves Guild but no one is there to quietly pay it off like in Oblivion. :banghead:

To have the option to purchase the house, you must retrieve Hrofdir's Shield for the Jarl. For that quest to appear in the Jarl's dialogue options, you must be Level 20 or higher. Completing the quest will open up the purchase house dialogue with the steward. The 5 quests for 5 individuals in Markarth is not required for purchasing the home. That bit is specifically for getting the rank/title of Thane which is not a prerequisite for purchasing Vlindrel Hall.

Edit: As to finding the Jarl/Steward themselves, you need to go to Understone Keep, all the way up and to the back of Markarth. Once in the door, head straight to the back and they'll be sitting on their respective chairs.

its not that hard if you stay focused, the problem is most people lose track of the quests you need to do, don't mess around with any other markarth quests, go to the jarl as soon as you get to markarth, then talk to him, he sends you on a mission, you come back and he sends you on another mission to get the shield, after i think the 2nd or 3rd mission he sends you on you bring back the shield and he will offer for you to buy the house after you bring him the shield, killing people in the town isn't gonna work, or doing the other quests in the town aren't necessary, just the 2 or 3 missions he sends you on, i have the markarth house on my new character and i haven't done any of the markarth quests except the ones he sent me on. but its easy to have a lot of side quests going and not noticing the ones you need to do in order to get the house, remember, straight to the jarl and do only the quests he sends you on first then you get the house, all the other markarth quests you can do after you live there.

Okay, there are a few problems with this quest, and I think I hit all of them during my playthrough.

To get the Markarth house, you have to do the 5/5 quests to help people in Markarth. Note that of the Jarl, the Steward, and the innkeeper in the Silver-Blood Inn, one of the three will always have a quest available so you can just keep helping them.

After that, you must either complete the main quest or reach level 20! If you're not either level 20 or have finished the main quest, you will not be offered the quest to go get the Jarl's shield. I was stuck here forever, since Markarth was the first house I went after and I was well below 20. Once you do the quest for the shield, if you've helped the townsfolk the Jarl will offer to make you Thane after you buy property, and the Steward will then offer you Vlindrel Hall.

Now, in my game, I bought the house, and the Jarl... still didn't make me Thane, for no reason. But I effectively was -- guards would overlook crimes ("I don't have time for this..."), etc. But without being appointed, I didn't have my housecarl; the quest is just a bit buggy. I did another 20 quests for the Jarl and others in Markarth, but nobody mentioned being Thane ever again. I finally had to work around it with the console ('setstage favor250 20' will cause him to name you Thane if you already own the house.)

Thank you for all this information. you have no idea how much rage left my mind knowing it was not a glitch. i'm far from level 20 (playing on Expert i'm sort of afraid of visiting dungeons) but i'm sure i'll survive living at the inn until then.

I left this quest for sometime and tried again. It was the shield I needed and I helped the 5th person.
I finally got the house in Markarth! :D Its everything I wanted. Roomy. Very nice.

Yay! :celebration:

Its one of my favorites as well. The small things make it stand out:

The nice entry way, very grand and fitting for a Dovahkiin.

Closing doors. Its very trivial but I like dwemer doors.

The architecture is unique, and its nice to have a dwemer house included for purchase without the aid of mods.

The view is very cool. Its high up (also out of the way and a bit more private then some houses) and can get a beautiful view of a very unique city and surrounding mountains.

I don't like the Markath house if I'm honest. Takes longer to get to than Breezehome/Honeyside, and it's a bit soulless inside - like any other Dwemer ruin. I can understand people really liking it though. :)

Its outside the box. A place where your character can stay and definatly grand for a Dovahkiin. Early in the game I hoped to find a character which lives in a castle who my Elf could marry (and live there) but no interest.
