In the quest

With Friends Like These...

DO NOT KILL

Alea Quintus

If you do, the blood on the ice quest will never start. The guy will just keep telling you the house isn't available yet due to an incident. There is no fix for this. How the scripters have this character tied to the characters in the Blood on the Ice quest, I don't know. I just know I saw somebody post this and since I was having the trouble, I started a new character and checked it my self. It's a problem.

My first (main) char who'm I plat'd the game with just had to do without that house. With over 150 hours in that char, I have been to windhelm hundreds of times and all times of day and night. It will not trigger. I stole the key and it will not trigger. The people that keep saying it will... just don't realize that for some, the quest is dead and can't be fixed.

This doesn't break the quest. Something else does. I have not done any Dark Brotherhood quests and the quest wont trigger for me. It's something unrelated.

I didn't say it was the only thing, I said it was one thing to avoid.

It DOES break the quest. Absolutely and confirmed by me myself and I. I tested it and bought this house about 20 times checking different things. This one borked it every time.

You may have done one of the many other things that can break this quest.

Again.. if you sleep in a bed and get the brotherhood starter where you have to chose to kill one of three people.. don't kill the middle person or this quest will bug for sure and that's a verified dead ender.

I'm sorry but I'm kinda stuck on this being an "Official Forum" as you are neither a moderator nor developer.

I got bugged out on this house also. Bought it and upgraded it. Can't live in it myself as there is a non-killable psycho living in it.

From what I've read the 'data' patch is supposed to come out in January. Hopefully this will fix many of the quest bugs. I'm sure this one is on the list as many have mentioned it.

I just wish there was a way we could discover a work around for it and "patch it" ourselves. I wouldn't even know where to start looking for how this scripting works.

it depends when you choose to do it. I didnt do it till I was nearly level 50, or attempt to do it anyway. When I tried before level 30 and a lot less quest progress, it was fine.

They tried to do an awesome, in depth mystery quest with multiple outcomes but unfortunately the game's infrastructure doesn't support that sort of thing well. It is susceptible to unforeseen outcomes unfortunately and is totally bugged as a result.

I had to read a guide to do the quest because I wanted the house and didn't want a (near) game ruining bug, and that is not how mystery quests should be. I give them an A for effort and an F- for completely boffing it up.

Am I the only person that did this without problem?
I had little problems, but it's very tedious how you have to do everything in exact order even if the first thing you do is steal Calixto's journal.

It'd be possible to fix it on our end if we can just figure out what scripting causes the switch between the check if the quest 'should' start and the actual quest starting

I hope there is a fix soon also. I would leave Windhelm through the main door and then fast travel to Winterhold, upon which I fast traveled back to the Windhelm Stables and walked into the city. I also did virtually every other combination of fast-travel and exiting/enterting of Windhelm, and nothing has worked. I'm level 57 so maybe to many quests have been done even though I haven't completed Dark Brotherhood, Theives Guild, the Main quest, or the Stormcloaks. Done lots of Miscellaneous and Side though.
When I try and buy the house, all the steward tells me is that "there's an unresolved issue" or something to that extent. And that's as far as I can go.

its already been proven that killing the three npc's in the first DB quest has no effect on this quest. broken quest is broken it either works or it doesn't and this one doesn't for a lot of people including those who have not even touched the DB quest.
