Sick of the dragons?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:34 pm

On my main, i've gotten up to level 45-46 (can't recall which) and am getting tired of the ancient dragon fights. Part of it is, in all fairness, because they stomp me into the ground (Spellsword, Apprentice difficulty). Would anyone else think it acceptable if the dragons stop coming after you once you kill enough of them, because it's getting to be so common an event? Or should the game just make dragon attacks rarer once you've beaten the main game?

I'd hate them to stop altogether like the Oblivion gates did in Oblivion but I get what you mean.

Can't you just run away so the Dragon buggers off?

I couldn't dream of seeing this topic title when i played Morrowind and Oblivion... And no, i've killed many dragons and they don't annoy me when they pop up.

It can be both really fun and patience testing. Sometimes, I just want to fast travel somewhere for an easy task a quick fedex quest if you will, then BOOM dragon spawns. Otherwise I'm always spoiling for a fight with the Dovah! I love watching forts full of bandits get purged by dragons (that go's for Necromancers too). I just sit back and watch the show in sneak.

I have encountered two random dragons in the past week, playing every day. Patch 1.02 seems to make them much more rare. On top of this, I only absorbed 1 soul out of six (four were "Word Wall Dragons"), so part of the patch isn't even effective.
Anyway, before the patch, I only got sick of dragons when they would spawn way too close to towns when everyone is outside...

I didn't do the first Quest to get the Dragon Stone and I have yet to see a dragon besides in the tutorial stages and I'm level 25 I believe on this character.

I do see dragon icons on the compass, but I've never actually went to investigate. I'm assuming those are there, but random encounters don't appear to show up. So if you're fine with doing faction quests and random quests, just don't do the main quest line from the start.

Of course this wouldn't help you on the game you're playing now though. :(

They seem to spawn based of 'in game time' . So if you fast travel everywhere time in the game will fast travel lol .. So the dragon end up spawning more often. I am not fast traveling much anymore (Just when I need to travel the entire map ) and they don't spawn that very often..

I'm kind of like this. I like them being around, and the occasional hard core battle, but they can be pretty annoying sometimes

For this exact reason I made (using the restoration glitch) an absolutely devastating blade, that I can use to one shot anything. It means that if, for whatever reason, I'm in the middle of something I can smash my way out of anything.

For instance, I had turned my autosave off (to try and limit frame rate issues) and when I was in the middle of a task for the mages guild (or right at the end) an ancient dragon literally landed on me in the courtyard of the college. It was late at night, I was about 30 seconds from saving the game and turning it off, so BOOM, it just nailed it.

I don't do it very often at all, but it's nice to have the option

Honestly, the dragon idea sounds better in theory than they are in practice. I kindof like it, but can't help feeling it's a little bit cheap.

If I were a designer:

- let dragons continue to ambush the player, but make them 'baby dragons' or whatever. Dragons that flyby, attack once, then have to land and fight like every other mob. Obviously stop them attacking rabbits whilst they're attacking the player.

- put in bigger, "bbq" dragons that flatten everything, including the player. Rig these to stay near their nest, but occasionally circle the area looking for giants/mammoths/entire towns to eat. These are the 'ultimate difficulty bump'. A player should either be running in terror or listening for the call of one of these beasts...

- put a quest in each hold to gain the Jarl's help in killing the local bbq dragon.
Gain his trust, ensure the local woodcutter can produce enough wood, the local mine is producing enough steel, the archer's love-life is good, the town drunk has his favourite hat... whatever is required!

Then you have the big battle:
Phase 1 is where the player attracts the dragon into the town to spring the trap with the dragon burning/trashing everything...
Phase 2 the trap is sprung, the dragon grounded, and everyone piles in.
Phase 3 the dragon is converted to a mortal (human-ish) form, and the dragonborn has to kill it.

- then for the 'realists' put in a few semi-bbq dragons that are *almost* impossible for the player to kill...

But that's all wishful thinking...

Not sick of them in the least. Maybe you'd like to see them removed? Would that make you happy? What I'm sick of, are posts like this. ALWAYS focusing on what you dislike instead of what you like.

You can stomp around the game world all day and not see one. Fast travel to a non-walled town and bingo - dragon attack. Sometimes if I'm trying to check the alchemist in Dawnstar or Morthal I'll literally sprint to the shop after fast traveling to try to beat the dragon attack. Post main quest dragon attacks should be a very rare event.

Since I finished the main quest they have become more rare it seems. I think the reason they didnt stop them entirely is to ensure people can have a continous supply of dragon souls for shouts. I have a ton of extra souls but if they made it so the dragons stopped after the MQ and some did the MQ early in their playthrough, they may not have souls to unlock the shout words they will subsequently find.

Whenever a dragon flies overhead my companion goes into "I'm going to stand here and stare into the sky forever until we kill it" mode, and since she's my mule I can't just leave her there, so it can get annoying. And there was also a 2 dragon (blood + frost) attack on winterhold that tied up some NPC's I needed, so I definitely wasn't in the mood for that.

Still their unpredictable nature does make the game a lot more interesting.

You only need them to learn the shouts, not to use them. It would be better if you actually needed the souls to use them as well as learn them.

I would be bummed out if the frequency was reduced. As it stands I don't see them all that often (lvl 52) so they are pretty much the only random encounter that offers some challenge. The thing that makes me laugh is when I get jumped by a Blood Dragon, or just a Dragon. Those things go down so easy.

The only thing that annoys me about the dragons is I kill so many and my main as 27 bones which is a lot of weight. The good side of that is I make like 3 dragon body armor and each sell for like 2k. So there are up and downs with dragons spawns.

I wish I could tone down the number of spawns, as they just don't give me anything anymore. I have more bones in my house than a decent sized graveyard, more money than I wish I had (and have nothing to spend it on), and all the skills I am interested in are already max'ed out.

I also wish they were less prone to always ending up attacking me, and instead just fly past me and into the distance. Would help making sneak feel more useful than for sheer combat situations.

Don't get me wrong. I love the dragons, the fight they put up, and the sound echoing in the mountains. It just gets a bit too much of a good thing. But I'm guessing the game isn't scaled towards "my kind" who can play pretty much forever.

Well, I can't say that I have that problem since I always get the right amount of fights with dragons.
It would be good if they make dragons not aggressive until they are attacked first after you complete the MQ.
They should also not count as enemies to the player then, so you can use FT, and everything else.

Dragons are fine, and a part of the game; if you don't like them, find a mod or stop playing.
