Low Res textures?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:18 pm

Hi guys, just got skyrim for PC. Used to have it for PS3 but got fed up with lag and slowdowns. Installed it fine, then when at the option menu to play, graphics options etc It says its put the settings onto high. Theonly thing I changed was shadow quality to medium and AA to 2.

I launch the game and press new game, when loading, noticed the dragon is really low res textures. 10 seconds later, it finished loading and then starts with the intro. Soon as your vision is fine, the game looks like it is running on very low graphics. Its worse than PS3 and thats saying something. I quit the game and see if anything has changed but it hasnt. Any ideas?

By default, Skyrim for the PC does not install HR textures so weaker machines can play the games. To get the better graphics, download the High Res Textures DLC (check the Steam DLC area). If you are going to use mods, then you need to follow the instructions to adjust the ini files for the DLC Textures (the DLC textures were handled differently and would cause conflicts with mods that used their own textures). Or you can find mods that have their own HR textures and not use the official DLC HR Textures. As with any modding, read ALL of the information on the mod - most of the good mods have instructions on how they interact with other mods or with the official HR Textures (and have the ini instructions I mentioned above).

Uh, that's not true.

By default, the same textures as those on the consoles are provided. Higher resolution are available from the DLC. However, by default, they are the same as those on the consoles. And the INI modification has been unnecessary sine patch 1.4

If they're lower resolution than that of consoles, try wiping your INI files.

Also, please provide a full dxdiag in a spoiler tag.

You are right in that these should be the base textures that should be included in all versions of the game. Which are not the HR textures availble through the DLC, right? So he needs to DL the HR textures to get the better quality textures, right? As far the ini adjust, I have yet to see any of the modders say for sure that it is not necessary. The information I read on Nexus modder pages that have any info about this still say that it is best to do the ini modification. And the modders I am referring to are the ones that are still updating their mods (CBBE is a good example). I quote directly from the mod info "As of the latest Skyim patch, this fix may no longer be needed." Notice the word "may". If you have specific information stating that this is fact now, please let me know where to find it.

1) No. He's saying it looks worse than consoles.
2) It has been confirmed. Load order was changed and loose files now override all. It is not needed.

Well, 2 things stand out:

1) Your GPU is a bit on the weak end of the spectrum
2) Your system is limited in the memory department but the 32-bit OS, so all of your memory is not really being put to use.

Could you provide an in-game screenie demonstrating things?

Disable the DLC, please. If it is a problem, it's best not to hide things here.

The DLC you downloaded. In the launcher, click Data Files and make sure the 2 ESPs are unchecked.

No problems. I was getting there next. I wanted a screenie of the game with the DLC disabled. Sorry if that wasn't clear, I tend to do that quite a bit.

Was trying to determine if it was game related first. :)

At least you got it sorted. ^^
