I'm fed up.

Installed the game. Seemed OK with some minor glitches. I was only doing side quests at the time.
I'm not worried about it, they'll fix it in the patch. Right shift still doesnt make my character run.
Patch comes along. Game is some what playable. I keep getting CTD at various times (still has minor glitches).
2nd patch comes along now I'm getting purple textures/dragons.
I started doing the main quest after patch 1.3.
Also, the main quest is not working. I killed a dragon, asorbed it's soul. Game states I don't have any.
Killed another dragon, asorbed it's soul, game states I now have one soul.
I go talk to the greybeards. They tell me to use my shout at them. I do and the guy in charge (don't know his name) keeps telling me to shout at them. I keep doing it but nothing happens. They just bend over. I'm using "unrelenting force".
This is where I'm stuck.

So, as of tomorrow I'll be uninstalling this game and reinstalling it. Hopefully a reinstall will fix some issues. I'll also uninstall/reinstall Steam. If the game is still unplayable, I'll uninstall it again and wait for the CK (January patch).

Hopefully the people at Bethesda are working overtime to fix these issues.

Were you having Steam issues too? I play it with Steam and haven't noticed any Steam-related problems. Unless some of the bugs are actually related to Steam and not just to the game? I hope not, that would svck...

Sorry you've been having so many issues. Maybe try it again in a few months or something when more patches come out...

Also, at the Greybeards, did you see them conjure up a ghost version of a Greybeard? It's the ghost Greybeard you're supposed to shout at...if they're not conjuring up the ghost guy then that's a problem...

That svcks. My game runs fine on PC.

My default key-binding to autorun is 'c' I think, not shift ... are you sure you changed your keybinding?

I think with that part of the greybeards they want you to use level 2 shout, so you have to hold Z ... I vaguely recall getting 'stuck' there too.

Are you hitting them with your shout, if your not then you should. You have to hit them with your shout, I was stuck for about 10 minutes at that part aswell.

I don't think the issue is with Steam but I'll reinstall it just to be sure.
I changed key bindings numerous times. I don't use auto run. If Caps-Lock is on, both L&R-shift makes my character run. If Caps-Lock is off, only L-shift makes my character run (R-shift does nothing). I use R-shift because I use the arrow keys.
I'm holding Z, but the shout doesn't seem powerful. The greybeards aren't summoning any ghosts, they just say "let's hear it". How long do I have to wait for them to summon?

Thanks for the support hobosrcool

Oh I forgot, the part with the "ghost" doesn't come till later I think. But that's another part some people seem to have trouble with, too.

I shouted at each one. I'm trying to shout at them all at one time but they aren't standing close together. I shouted miltiple times at each one.
I even fast traveled to a new city, came back and it still ain't working.
I had Lydia wait outside and then come in. I had weapons both drawn and sheathed. I was wearing elvin armor, so I took it off.

Finally, I told Lydia to go home and I jumped off the mountain. IT'S REINSTALL TIME

Erm just so you know, the first dragon soul you absorb (Mirmulnir) does NOT count as a soul. It simply unlocks Fus. That's a normal thing

First dragon you kill gives you the shout, no soul. the 2nd one gave you a soul, so everything's right there. With the shouting, I am not sure. Maybe some bug. You stand right next to him, so he stumbles back? You have to shout at the one that talks to you.
Sorry to hear you have these problems :(

OK. I'll try it one more time. Now here's where I think the (my) game is broke. Shouts are three syllables, correct? Is unrelenting force: Fus Ro Dah?
I'm at the greybeards, all up in their grill, and I only hear my guy yelling "Ro Dah"? WTF?

Tried it. It sounds like he's yelling "Fus Doh" or "Fus Ro" and that's it. Did I kill a dragon out of order?

It should definitely start with "Fus". What makes me wonder: the test, if you really can shout, starts before you get "ro" and "dah". If the other two already gave you their word, they will summon ghosts of themselves in the middle of the room, you have to shout at them three times (again, be sure to stand near enough).

Edit: If you missed that, speak to him again, they should place themselves around the middle and summon the ghosts one after another.

I keep speaking to him. He just tells me to shout. I do and he keeps asking. They never summon ghosts, no matter how long I wait.
I've been to one word wall (in Bleak Falls Barrow). I killed the dragon after that.

Well, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Way_of_the_Voice is the UESP, you can see others had the problem, and you can also now setstage [quest] [level] to get past it, at least

Hope this helps!

Before you freak out and go for the nuclear option right off the bat. Just start a new character, zoom through the plot to the point where you current one is stuck, and see if it happens again.

Re-installing over a simple script glitch is over reacting.

Thanks littlelou, it does help some but I'm still going to uninstall and reinstall to see if other problems are fixed also. If not, I'll wait for January (I have other games I could play while I wait).

You're preaching to the choir. This is the umpteen millionth glitch that I have either read about or experienced. A disheartening amount of them happen in the main storyline. I had a similar problem later in the main story and have had to deal with glitches in several other quest lines. Some which forced me to go online and mine data to write codes/scripts to fix them. I shouldn't have to "program," a game that I paid good money for.

What I keep wondering to myself is why couldn't Bethesda have done a game key lottery like Blizzard did with Diablo III to playtest the game on a massive scale. We are the guinea pigs and we are paying $60 a pop for the "privilege?" The answer seems to be simple economics. They wanted to get this game in this year between WoW expansions so they released a half-finished product.

I can't blame the for the strategy. I am a businessman and I would have done the same thing. I will, however, remember this when the next TES game is released and I won't make the same mistake twice.

When the next TES game is released I will wait and see how many problems people are having (and the patches) before buying. Also get rid of Steam. Find another way to combat piracy. I could care less about my ahievements and the "community". I'll also patch the game myself.
Stop holding my hand every time I do something with the game. I just uninstalled Deus Ex: HR and Skyrim. Both times, Steam popped up asking me "delete game files?". STOP IT.
I'm not some ten year old console gamer. I'm a PC builder/gamer that will use my computer any way I wish. I also uninstalled Steam and will not be installing any Steam games (including Skyrim) for the forseeable future.
