Why hasn't the mouse been fixed yet.

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 8:28 pm

I'm just wondering why there still hasn't been anything done about the awful first person mouse control issues. I'm tired of chasing down tweaks on the internet, most of which are completely ineffective or only marginally lessen the lag. The game has been out for almost half a year now and the problem still persists. Why hasn't anything happened?

Will anything ever happen?

I'm sorry if this comes across in a hostile tone, I just want to know what's going on with this problem.

What mouse problem? Lag? I use a mouse like many others. 1st or third person mouse action is great. There is no perceptible mouse lag. No mouse problems at all on this end. Tell us about your mouse, its driver and so on.

In fact you might need to describe your whole system if there is a lag problem. It could be a number of things.

Well, the sluggish mouse isn't exactly a secret, so it's not really needed to act as if it was exclusive case here. If you don't have it or haven't noticed, just be happy.

I think the hidden message is "Go buy a controller" or even go buy a Xbox.

As it so happens i have an Xbox controller but i prefer my FPS/TPS type controlled games with mouse and keyboard.

If you haven't heard of it, I envy you, but it's an extremely common problem. Just google "mouse lag skyrim" and marvel at the plethora of forum threads, youtube videos etc to be found on the topic.

There are a LOT of mouse-related bugs. Its weird. I don't really have the lag problem much, only when in the save/load screens. What I have is 1) The extreme precision needed to click on the thing you wanted in the in-game menus..If youre even a little off, itll just close that window totally. Highly irritating.

2) When using magic (candlelight spell in this case) the left mouse button will suddenly just stop wroking all together. Jsut stops.I ll have the hand out, with the light orb in it, magicka at max etc..and it wont do anything if i click it. The right mouse button continues as normal. and then in a little bit it starts working again, equally at random!

I'm pretty sure the reason everyone experience mouse lag is because their FPS is at 60. This is often in dungeons and when looking up at the sky or down at the ground, because then there are little stuff to render.
Most people say "disble V-sync to fix this" (setting iPresentInterval=0 means that you disable V-sync), which is wrong. That's a bad idea, because it has been shown that disabling V-sync (iPresentInterval) can cause crazy physics behaviour, issues with the in-game time, sound issues that so sounds never stop, flickering water, etc. In other words it's a bad idea to disable V-sync.

The solution is to cap your FPS in Skyrim using an FPS-capper/limiter. NVIDIA Inspector (google it and download it, it's free, safe, and very good) has one if you have an NVIDIA card. Dxtory is also a program you can use if you have an AMD card to cap the FPS (also read the relevant section 2.1 in this thread if using Dxtory: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1329260-b1gbaddaddys-big-post-of-fixes-and-tweaks/).
You need to cap your FPS in Skyrim to 57-59, in other words below 60. The reason you experience lag at 60 FPS is because of a bug in Bethesda's engine called "64 hz bug". Basically, it means that your computer screen renders at 64 hz, but Skyrim only renders at 60 hz. That means 4 frames per second are being skipped, which results in lagginess or mouse lag.

I also recommend having a decent mouse. I switched to a temporary, cheap and crappy mouse when my old one broke. It caused me to experience quite a lot mouse lag, even though I had my FPS capped at 58.

I would also like to note, that a wireless mouse will also present issues such as a delay or "laggy" control movement when gaming. Ive had many mice over the years and seen many present identical problems in a plethora of other games when they are wireless models, regardless of signal/hardware quality. If you game, use a wired mouse and keyboard.

This is the one that drives me batty. I've never experienced any mouse lag, but it seems like 95% of the time when I click on some sections in a trader window (usually "Misc," but I've had it happen while trying to click on "Books" as well), somehow the game interprets that as my wanting to close the menu instead. RRRRRRGH. :swear:

Also annoying: trying to select the second or third option in a list of dialogue choices, but the game deciding that no, you meant to pick the first one! This one has actually forced me to reload a few times, since having the wrong dialogue option chosen for me has screwed up a couple of quests and, in one memorable instance, got my character engaged to Sorex Vinius.

About that menu mouse bug thing. Really annoying indeed. I hate when you get kicked out of the menu when clicking on a normal option.

I thought I'd share what I find to be the only solution to it:
Simply scroll down with the mouse before clicking on the option you want. Just scroll down, then back up; it can be a tiny bit. It seems to make it so you don't get kicked ouf of a dialouge menu when clicking on a dialouge option.
If I don't do this "workaround", then I can get kicked out of the dialouge menu 10-15 times in a row. Extremely annoying. I wonder how much the developers tested this, or if they just don't give a crap or are just in general very lousy programmers.

i know that the inventory menus close when i click too far left on the screen, which i interpreted as an intentional, if annoying part of the inventory controls. I have long ago switched to browsing inventory and magic menus with WASD. It works much better since the inventory has been designed for controllers.

FPS limiters have done nothing for me so far. Maybe the limiters themselves are not working though. Since I haven't really seen any change whatsoever afterwards, neither in Framesnor in mouse lag. But that it would be tied to FPS makes sense, because the mouse is much nicer in areas where there is little to render and few visual effects.
What I don't understand however is that in third person the mouse works perfectly, no matter where I am and what i'm looking at, but as soon as i go back to first person it starts jerking around and lagging again. What is causing this difference and why can't the third person camera control mechanics simply be applied to first person controls?
