Specifically when you turn up to the funeral and nothing happens? All the NPCs who are meant to be there are there, but nothing's happening! I've tried waiting, going away and coming back, played from an earlier save. I tried to use console commands, but although it advances the quest line, the NPCs just stand there being 'busy'.

For anyone who is interested or has experienced this problem, I emailed Bethesda and got a reply within a few days. Because of the nature of radiant quests and the way the game engine works, apparently you need to either wait (for anything upto 30 game days) or go and do some other stuff and come back later. It's possible that certain events won't trigger as they are supposed to unless other things, not necessarily relating to that quest, are done. I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it.

Haven't been back to see if the Companions are still standing around watching a burning body yet! I
