What exactly causes a CTD and a freeze?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:25 pm

I am just curious. Ever since 1.5.26, i get ctds in places i never get before, such as the DB sanctuary everytime i enter and Understone keep. I also get ctd in karthspire and randomly anywhere outdoors. What causes a ctd?

Also, what causes a freeze, which leads to 'skyrim not responding and needs to close'?

Thirdly, i noticed that after i installed the official hi-res pack and load them via the ini, i get more ctds. I know my laptop can handle the hi-res pack well, so i dont know whats wrong with the ctds. Plus, i do have quite a number of mods that work extremely well for 1.4.21, but i updated some to the 1.5 version. However other mods did not receive any updates.

Lots of things cause CTDs and freezing. You mentioned a couple such as graphic bottlenecks and mods that aren't updated to the current version of the game, but there are others. One example you didn't mention is audio. Just like video, audio files also require system resources and can lead to CTDs and/or freezing.

Complex systems have many different things interacting that in turn create unknown consequences, including consequences that are not consistent. Chaos theory. :) We just have to accept this aspect of our existence and not be too upset.

As stated, many things can cause them.

However, background stuff can do it as well.

The INI edit you mentioned hasn't been necessary since the non-beta version of 1.4.

Also, a full dxdiag in a spoiler tag could possible shed some light on things.

Firstly, for dxdiag report, do i just run it when i start up my computer, or should i play a bit of skyrim first, then do the dxdiag and post it here? I am sorry i dont quite get the dxdiag part.

Secondly how do u do a spoiler?

I do remember the last time i ctd was when i was about to cast a dual lighting spell at the Saarthal Boss while he was casting frost on me.
Also, i do use a custom female voice file. It is a bit anime-ish and the shouts are in japanese. I downloaded them ages ago, maybe when patch 1.3 was still the latest patch. But i dont think that is the reason for ctd?

Looking at your DXDIAG -- you have a 1GB VRAM chipset that also shares extra RAM with your system -- so any time the game uses more than 1GB of VRAM it will start to use the slower System shared RAM which will cause this type of behaviour -- so Best thing to do would be to reduce settings - texture packs etc. until the game uses less than 1GB of VRAM (run some testing to track in game usage and adjust as needed until it stays under 1GB.)

Also you have 4GB. of System RAM but currently are already loading almost 2GB. of that memory with background processes ( 1857MB used ) any number of which may be the cause -- look into turning of any processes that are not needed before gaming to free up those resources and CPU processes for the game to use -- For the same reason as above since you only have 4 GB. total if the game settings reach above the total of 4 GB. in use (including any the game is currently using for shared graphics memory if using over 1 GB.) the system will start to use the Cache file on the HDD to swap info to and from the game causing stuttering\slowdowns as well, so shutting down some of those background programs may help by freeing up more of the 4GB for the game to use.

But the game wont be as pretty T.T
O well, no wonder i have no problem with the original High settings and random ctds with the Highres pack.
I suppose sacrificing beauty of skyrim by 5% is worth it for no ctds.

But the RAM, the PC was start up and 5min later i took this dxdiag. I closed all my useless processes everytime i login, leaving a 26-32% Ram usage. I also closed other services and now i only left those important services and processes. How could it use 2gb of ram already? Please shed some light on me T.T

Lots of stuff can use it up. For instance, Firefox regularly uses 250+ MBs for me. It all adds up, and it adds up rather quickly.

still i find it rather strange to have nearly half of my ram used up when idling. I even closed most of those useless processes and services before hand. Maybe because it is superfetch? No idea :(
But i did find that disabling some features of aero theme does free up a bit of Vram.

Well, you could always sort the Task Manager by memory. That's what I do when trying to track down memory hogs.

my task manager doesnt have many processes going on. Highest is prolly CCC.exe which is about 10mbish. The rest are much lower and there are only about 12 processes going on. I dont know if its processes that hog the RAM, but i did read up somewhere that windows 7 does something to the RAM so that even on idle, there are 2gbish ram used. But if it is not the case, i really really dont know what is going on
