PC Version worth buying?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:43 pm

Straight up is the PC version worth getting currently? The PS3 version is of course the worst, but the PC version also appears to have its share of issues as well. So, anyone with experience playing the PC version that could give feedback would be great, thx.

Yes, mods and better looking visuals makes it worth it in my book. What specs do you have to play the game on?

If you're only looking for a less buggy version, I wouldn't recommend spending the money unless Steam has the game on sale or something. I've had plenty of bugs on the PC version that I didn't get on the 360 version, but I also had 360 bugs that I didn't get on PC. I don't think it's unfair to say that this might also be the case between the PC and PS3 versions.

Of course, the PC version has much faster load times, but is that worth buying the game again? It wouldn't be for me, but it might be for you.

There is the "mod" factor. But unless you plan on doing some modding of your own, or at least learning enough to fix or get other mods to play nicely together, this alone may not be worth the money. I got the game on PC after having it on the 360 because I like to mod, so it was worth it for me. I get more life out of the game because I mod it, not because I only use other people's mods.

And how do you feel about playing games on PC versus console? That's something to consider.

How's the tech level of your rig? Is it old? Are you willing to pay for upgrades (if necessary)? Are you comfortable upgrading things on your own if need be, or are you willing to pay for that too (if necessary)?

Consider all these things before you make up your mind.

From what I gather, PC and Xbox share most of the same bugs vis a vis broken quests, etc. In the very least, I don't believe the PC version has any more bugs than the Xbox. We all know that the PS3 is a different beast altogether. The difference is console commands. That's the ace card the PC version has. Mods are cool but it's the console that let's the PC player advance stuck quests, add missing quest items, summon missing NPC's, etc. Considering the number of bugs in gamesas's games, I honestly don't know why anyone plays them on any other platform.

Every platform has its fair share of problems. Xbox 360 has the texture streaming issues, PS3 has the lag issues, and PC version requires a lot of effort to maintain and configure the game to your liking. You also need a fairly powerful rig to handle the game at good framerates.

Don't expect a monumental leap in graphics, though. The textures are still under par (though the High-Res DLC helps with this), there's the Z-Fighting issues which cause the distant mountains to flicker wildly, there's the Shadows which are still utterly horrible (though you can make them a bit better), and all in all the PC version is what you would expect from a console port: slightly better graphics, shorter load times, but underwhelming considering what dedicated PC games can do these days.

All that being said, tweaking all those small things until you find your sweet spot, you can get the game looking miles better than the consoles could ever hope for.

But it's still a big move, and if you are not already an experienced PC gamer, it's not a plunge one should take lightly.

I have both PC and PS3 verions. PC Skyrim unplayable for me: still lo-res textures after two reinstalls, notorius stuttering, and other various bugs (my new pc assembled only for skyrim - now only for browsing the net...). PS3 game run in low resolution, but smooth, no or very small lag since the last patch, and don't need read forums day to day for mystic solutions, driver reinstalls, borderless window mods and frame limiters.

This isn't an issue with mods as there are utilities like BOSS that sort the load order for mods for you. Also anything you download from the Workshop or Nexus will have comments and ratings. The better the rating the less likely there is to be a issue...

So many people seem to have issues running Skyrim on PC, but I haven't had much of a problem. Is it the game or are people trying to run it on old machines or PCs with out of date drivers?
