inventory reacts sluggishly

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:53 am

title says it all. I have been looking all over the place for a fix, couldn't find one so far.
If i press "i" to go to my inventory, it takes a full 5 seconds to load up, not that long you say?

Fair enough, however, every time i want to equip, use, store (or generally "transfer") items in or out of my inventory it also takes 5 seconds per item.
There are exceptions, generally if it's not the last item of a stack it usually takes less time.
Then again, the strange thing is that if i press the key to "take all" or "store all" (or something like that) it happens instantly.

here's some (hopefully) useful info:

my system:
cpu: core i7 920
MB: Asus p6t deluxe v2
RAM: 12 gigs ddr3
gpu: 2 x HD7970 in cf
hdd: standard 7200 rpm, 64 meg buffer

things i have tried:
- delete the 35k dwemer museum keys (derp)
- delete other saves (this actually sped up skyrim too o_O)

Not sure what else i can do. I must admit that i cheated on this save by increasing the max carryweight, i must also add that decreasing the inventory size to it's original number does not help.
I have come across countless other topics with similar issues, none of them had the answer :\

On a final note: the loading of the game itself is slower than it used to be (because save file bloating?) and going into the other menus goes instantly as it should. (also sorry if it has been answered before, i used the search function but couldn't find anything particularly useful)

Inventory always feels sluggish. But it certainly doesn't require 5 seconds to do something.

I feel this is not a problem that players can easily fix. Or even figure out. If indeed it's the game at fault, then we can't know what's going on, unless we have a debugger, source code, or some other means to look into the workings of the game.

Have you tried a new game ? Start a new game, get out of Helgen, go to Riverwood. Then buy a bunch of cheap stuff to fill your inventory. With a new game, is it still as sluggish as with your ordinary game ?

My inventory isn't sluggish at all, it sounds like your console commands could have caused some issues. Try a save before you used them.

a new game? hell why not, i'll give it a try when i get home from work.

I did think about that console command too, the reason i don't think it's the main culprit is because the "slow down" happened quite some time after i used it for the first time.
And wouldn't the game return to normal if i reset the size to the original?

In any case, as i thought, unless i can get a look at the source code or get some sort of debugger attached to the game i probably won't figure out what's causing it.
I was even thinking that increasing (and decreasing) the inventory space might have [censored] up the hash map (if the inventory works with a hash that is), but since i have no way of knowing how it works it will only ever be a guess.

Though, other players have increased their inventories without issues far beyond the numbers i pushed it :\

You are on a PC. So if you feel nervous about it, you can move or copy all your current savefiles to somewhere safe.

In case I wasn't clear, the idea of starting a new game is just to check if the problem is indeed caused by the larger inventory space. When starting a new game, you don't start with anything special in your new savefiles. And therefor the bug should not happen then. I have a small suspicision that your problem might be unrelated to the size of your inventory. If that is the case, you know you have to start looking somewhere else.

Exactly. Speculating about how a game works internally is useless. We'll never know. You don't even know if they are using hash-tables. (I'd be surprised if they did in the savefile itselt. The savefile is just a sequence of little facts about the state of your player and the state of the world.

i started a new game as you said, the bug doesn't occur there. So it is something with that particular save...

Problems are sometimes caused by addons. And in particular: by addons that run scripts. Scripts that forget to stop, and keep running all the time.

Have you tried this: ?
Disable all addons.
Start the game. Load the savefile where you know you had problems.
You should get a warning that your current savegame depends on addons that were uninstalled. Ignore that.
Is it still sluggish ?
If it still is, then I don't know what to do.
But if your game isn't sluggish anymore, you only need to figure out what addon is responsible.
Stop the game. Enable one addon. Retry.
Repeat. Until you found out what addon causes the problem.

If you know which one it is, there are 2 options.
1) Disable the addon. Re-enable all other addons. Never use the faulty addon again.
2) Disable the addon. Load your problematic savefile. Should work without slugginess now. Go into your house. Save the game.
3) Log out. Restart the game. Load the last savefile. Go outside. Save the game. Log out. Restart the game. Go inside. Save the game. Log out.
4) Enable the faulty addon again. If there was any faulty script in your savefile, it should be gone now. Load the latest savefile.
5) Hopefully your game is not sluggish anymore.

However, if it was indeed an addon, I would just not use it anymore. Much less riskier.
Good luck.

Congratulations !
Let us know how it worked out.

I built my own new PC last night. Still working on re-installing all my old stuff. I saved my old Users folder, and that helped a lot. Whenever I re-install an application I had before, the application instantly finds my old settings ! (Because they are somewhere in my Users folder). That is sooo much better than before, when changing anything Windows basically required you to reconfigure everything anew.

Got my Skyrim working. I haven't dared to check my framerates with Fraps yet ......

nice. It took me 2 whole days to get the cables running just as i wanted them but it was worth it!
The cosmos 2 is really damned massive... o_O

On the other hand, there is definitely something wrong with the savefile. It's still slow as hell :\
The new game works as it should.

I love this game but the fact that looting bodies, opening and picking loot from chests, generally putting things in or taking stuff out of my inventory takes so damned long really puts me off playing, which is a shame.

Not saying this is your problem, but on my pc I get the same slugishness when I have a lot of saves stacked up on the same char, if I keep it down to less than 15-20 I don,t have that problem anymore.
