Crash with new install patch

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 2:38 pm

Greetings.
I haven't played Skyrim for quite a while, so I decided to install it again, letting Steam do all the work, patching it, appliing the HD pack, but everytime I start a new game, once the thief on the carriage says "You damned Stormcloaks!" the game crashes with no clues left behind. Already tried with mods, clean install and once more clean install without touching any otions or settings and getting everything to low and turning HD pack off, but it always crashes at the same point +- few seconds.

Any idea what could be causing it and what could fix it? Would be really gratefull for that.

Edit: I already played Skyrim for hunderths of hours, just uninstalled it about three months back, now reinstalled, and only thing that really changed was a patch number for Skyrim, still the same computer and everything, never really had any crashing problem except for after great many hours of playing), let alone at specific point.

Things to try:
update graphic drivers by first uninstalling the old ones in the control panel, consider using a driver sweep utility
delete skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini in my documents>my games>skyrim
verify integrity of games files on steam
uninstall skyrim and delete the skyrim folder in steam>steamapps>common, then reinstall skyrim

Did all four. Crashes at the exactly same point no matter whether it was the heavy-tweaks version I had or the 100% clean install I have now. Even wiped clean whole steam and reinstalled, just for the heck of it. Brand new drivers too.

any overclocking going on? are gpu and cpu temps all normal? have you tried windowed mode? unofficial skyrim patch? all or most other games are stable i assume.

No overclocking, no change (well apart from the Skyrim Patches) since I last played at all, temperatures ok, everything else runs just like usual, Skyrim causes no heavy strain on the computer either, it just plainly and very quickly closes without any unusuall spike or stuttering. Tried windowed mode while checking the strain on the computer, no change there the very same crash still occuring. Uofficial patch installed as well.

Just an addition, found saves I though were lost, tried on several, also downloaded some more, the game always crashes withing 2 minutes from loading, doesn't matter whether I just stand inside a house, fight or talk. Except for the new game, where it always crashes when the thief on carriage says word "stromcloaks".

So this occurs with a totally vanilla skyrim? If it does, then try running on the very lowest graphics settings, even if you computer is beefcake. If that works then at least you know its graphics related. Odd that it also happens exactly when the guy says stormcloaks; would either point to a script or audio issues. There is an audio tweak you can try, something to bith turning your computers audio to 16bit something. You can find it easily by visiting any site that comes up in google why typing crash freeze fixes. In case of the script issues, its a long shot by try downloading the CK.

As to your savegames, yeah they almost certainly wont work anymore, especially if those saves had alternate ini's, mods, etc. There is one method that may "clean" your savegame, see the spoiler below.

Spoiler

As previously stated, in same cases it is better to attempt to "clean" a savegame once a mod has been uninstalled. Although the previous steps will sometimes work, there are certain mods, such ashttp://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9494 or http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10175, that modify spawns, and as such, a more thorough cleaning must be attempted. These modified actors can cause CTDs and freezes if they remain in the world space after the mod has been uninstalled. A modified cleaning procedure is required because these actors will not despawn and be replaced with uninstalling the mod and performing the basic cleaning steps stated above. These advanced cleaning steps will force exterior and interior cells to reset, despawning and respawning almost all actors in the game, among other things. For a more complete description of what a cell reset will do, visit http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Respawning.
To make sure almost all cells reset, its is necessary to wait for 31 days. Some cells will never reset, as they are flagged as "Never Resets" by Bethesda. These mostly include player homes and other important locations. See http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Safe for the complete list.
WARNING: Forcing cell resets will clear almost all containers and respawn random or the original objects contained therein, while deleting anything else, such as player added items. Therefore do not store any objects that you may wish to keep in these containers. Instead, place these objects within a container in a cell that is flagged "Never Resets". A good place is a chest or sack in a player owned home.
First Note: These steps can also be applied when installing mods that modify many cells and actors. In most cases, these mods will install correctly and modify all relevant actors. However, in some cases, not all actors will be properly modified when installing the mod. These steps will force these actors to respawn with the correct modifications.
Second Note: When uninstalling a mod that uses scripts, sometimes the scripts will continue to be present in your game. These steps may also purge these redundant scripts from your game. However, this has not been verified.
  • Download and install the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12625 mod from Skyrim Nexus. This mod will allow you to wait for 31 days without having to wait 24 hours 31 times, due to the limitations of the default vanilla wait menu. This mod was created with mod cleaning in mind.
  • Deactivate or uninstall any mods that require you to eat, sleep, drink, stay warm, etc, to survive, such as http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10843. If you do not disable these, your character will die instantly after following these steps due to starvation, dehydration, etc.
  • Uninstall the mod you wish to clean Skyrim for. Or, install the mod you would like to have in Skyrim.
  • Load your savegame. Ignore the notice that the savegame is missing content if it appears.
  • Travel to another world space that IS NOT classed as the Skyrim world space. The best option is the Skyrim Testing Hall. See the Testing Hall notes below step 16 as to how to travel there, and how to exit it.
  • Once in the Testing Hall, open the command console and type "pcb" (without quotes).
  • Next, in the command console, type "tfc" (without quotes). This will enable free camera mode, and will help reduce the waiting time required for 31 days to pass.
  • Exit the command console, and press "T" on your keyboard to enable the waiting menu. The change in appearance is due to the No Boring Sleep-Wait Menu mod you installed.
  • Move the slider all the way to the right until 31 days appears.
  • Press "Enter" on your keyboard. You will need to wait for 2-3 minutes if you toggled free camera mode with the "tfc" command, or 12 minutes if you did not.
  • Make a new save.
  • Exit Skyrim.
  • Play Skyrim and load your save that is in the Testing Hall.
  • Open the command console and type "pcb" again (without quotes).
  • Travel to your preferred destination using the command console "coc , as discussed in step 5.
  • Play! (Thanks to apoJake, on the WATER forum, for the basic steps, and MontyMM for adding them to the Wiki).
Testing Hall Notes: The best place to travel to for cleaning is the Skyrim Testing Hall, a cell that is totally divorced from the Skyrim world space. It was created for QA testing by Bethesda developers. To travel to this Hall, type "coc qasmoke" in the command console (without quotes). Note that should you wish to exit from this testing hall, you will need to travel out using the console command "coc ". The must be replaced with the name of the cell you would wish to travel to. Before traveling to the Testing Hall, it is a good idea to know the cell name of where you would wish to return to. To discover the cell name of this place, be present at that location and type "help 0" (without quotes) in the command console. The must be replaced with name of the location. I.e. "help breezehome 0" (without quotes) will tell you that the correct code is WhiterunBreezehome or that Sovngarde can be reached with Sovngarde01.

Yes, reinstalled about 4 times by now, tried all settings, vanilla with/without HD textures, fan patch, about everything labeled with crash or fix, audio fix. I have CK but not sure as to what to do with it in this case.

And my saves work just fine, apart from that the game crashed within 60 seconds from loading the game. Even tried to get someone elses vanilla clean saves, just in case, but nothing different there.

I really tried anything I could think of, and since I played it a lot already, I know my computer can handle it just fine - and nothing on my system changed whatsoever in the while I haven't played Skyrim. Which brings me back to - something in the new patch. Before this I rarery ever crashed, now I can't play at all, can't even call it a CTD when it occurs few seconds after loading everytime.

I'm having the exact same problem, i've done the exact same steps, reinstalled all drivers(.net/dx etc etc)

My game worked perfectly before HD pack/after HD pack but since that time a patch has done something.

New games always crash at the exact same place (the thief talking) and Then i've used the alternate start mod which gives me success for an hour at most. I've noticed that i'll get some missing textures(particualry on trees/clothes/non animate objects)

i've tired all graphics setting and all my temps are a-ok

Here's my DX thingy ma jig.

A. This thread belongs in the CTD thread, not this sub-forum. (http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1270631-crashes-during-gameplay/)
B. If you really want to solve this, you will scour those 74+ pages in that thread for this issue, I would suggest you start last and work your way backward, since it may be patch-related. There were many CTDs right after 1.4, 1.5 fixed them - I was one of those W/that prob.
C. Your GPU fans could be blocked by crud, or failed. This would cause a failure after a certain amount of rendering time as you describe. I would suggest you use a GPU temp monitoring program W/logging like GPU-Z (when you turn on logging) and see how hot your GPU temps are getting. The prob W/this is usually it freezes the entire OS not just CTD. GL.

You almost patronizing there have you read our problems? they are common if not exactly the same. This suggest:
1.Patch problem
2.if he also has 32-bit windows 7 os then could be that and skyrim
3.it's related to some sort of DRM problem

Either way I know you have best intentions but i'm no idiot when it comes to hardware/software
suggesting "Your GPU fans could be blocked by crud, or failed" and "If you really want to solve this, you will scour those 74+ pages in that thread for this issue"
are almost insulting like I haven't looked through that thread mutiple time and posted with no reply. I have a £30 game that is broken and because i'm part of the EU I have the right to ask for my money back however because it was working completely fine before the patch i'm not going to do that unless it stay that way and resorting to "the unofficial skyrim pacth" will not suffice for game breaking bugs. I'm usually linient with these thing Far Cry 2 had a save bug that corrupted saves and i was fine with that, I was even fine with cladious vile quest braking bug in oblivion. But now i know how the ps3 user base felt when their game was unplayable maybe I shouldn't of told them to stop whining and start a new game only to be faced with the same problem likeswise I do everytime I start a new game.
