Followers, don't they use the same AI?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:19 am

Having played a fair amount of RPG games (3), I was under the impression that all Followers use the same AI to control their Behaviors & Tactics and are different only in Starting Attributes, Preferred Equipments, Physical Appearances, & Voice Actors. But am I entirely correct?

After 2 weeks of reading Posts here at Skyrim Cheats, Hints, and Spoilers Forums, there seems to be countless claims of Followers who:
  • Cannot die under any circumstances (Mjoll the Lioness)
  • Randomly reset their Inventory (Lydia)
  • Smarter than others in timing their Shield Block (Jordid the Swordmaiden)
  • More buggy than others while traveling; hence getting stuck in stairs, rocks, doors more often (Lydia)
  • More buggy than others in a fight
  • More buggy than others in Inventory
Are any of these claims true?
Even though I've had only 1 Follower so far in my 40 hours of play, I'm just very reluctant to believe this is so. It seems unnecessary for Developer to create AI Tactics separately for each of the Followers.

I took these Quotes from another Thread and changed their names to initials.

i didn't know some followers were not killable. i haven't used followers much because i am scared they would die and i would feel guilty.
I have heard so much good about Mjoll the Lioness (who can not be killed) fighting abilities and very few bugs her..except..U can not give her a gift then take it back..or it will be labeled as stolen! LOL So perhaps that is not the one that will solve his particular problem..LOL (It would not bother me unless i need to store things in her inventory, but he needs to do that it seems)

Other than Mjoll the Lioness, i agree that Jordid the Swordmaiden (Solitude Housecarl for Proudspire) is one of the prettiest marryable followers, and yes she is a blonde Nord female) I have heard of no bugs with her, but she can get killed if u also use her as a folllower for fighting and not just a housecarl or wife, so be sure u give her very good gear to work with in a fight.
She can not be your follower nor marry u until u do the quests/meet all requirements to buy Proudspire Manor in Solitude. But she is no doubt, worth it.

As for Lydia, she might not have stole your weapon on purpose..she is buggy and reverts back to her initial bow..unless u use codes (twice) to take it away from her and give her a better bow..if u think your other weapon did not wear out or vanish to the void and that she still has it..try pickpocketing to get it away from her....if it is not there then it is not her fault...(u can pickpocket her or use codes to get her starter armor away from her also, to get her into better armor without having that extra weight still there in her inventory of her old one, but she needs 'Heavy Armor' or she does not want it. Always be sure what u give your follower is better than what they have for their fighting/class type or they won't use it. By default they want to use their fiercest weapon. If u temporarily gave her a stronger weapon and then took it away and she could not revert back to the old weapon u gave her it is possible that she had to drop something (such as this at the time) because u overweighted her carryable weight for a bit, not sure but it is one of many possibilities. Anyway, Lydia is sweet, but still buggy. Without work arounds u have these glitches.

The AI is different between followers, they have different fighting styles. Aela will sneak well with you and sticks to ranged weapons mostly, tho she isn't opposed to grabbing a 2 hander off the ground and getting up close if necessary. Other followers stick to merle or magic so there are obvious AI differences.

AS far as some being immortal that's because some are considered essential npcs like Aela and Mjoll. They both give quests deemed important by Beth so they can't die.

The other differences are mostly bugs I think. Other then done inventory things. Everyone assumes if your deck out a daedric bow and give it to your follower they will use it because it has to be better then what they have. This isn't necessarily the case since a lot of npcs have unique gear, so even tho it may look like a hunter's bow it probably doesn't have the same stats and may just be better.

interesting topic. yup there are glitches.

I have found that Lydia will continue to use anything that i give her as long as it is better than what she is using.

i have found that Aela will also use anything better.

they both look great in forsworn armor BTW.

Based on my extensive knowledge of previous BGS titles, and the assumption that most of it functions the same way:

- Some followers may be 'essential', meaning they cannot be killed.
- This is most likely a bug.
- Each class/group of enemies may have a unique Combat Style, or list of guidelines and rules that they must follow when fighting. This includes reaction time, how often they take 'cover' and whether or not they run away if outnumbered.
- All creatures and NPC's use the same NavMesh. (What tells things where they can and cannot walk) So they should be just as buggy/fine as everything else.
- Again should be the same, mind the Combat Style.
- This may be bugs with managing inventories.

So it's all either on purpose, or most likely a bug. Hope that helps. :)

From what you mention, the only things really related to the AI are the blocking and stucking parts. Anyway, in previous games there were different combat styles and different AI packages, so, all you mention could be true.

Mjoll cannot die, this is true. Did you also know she is incapable of shutting the &*$# up?

Have you heard the one about the cutpurse who [censored] his armor when she pulled Grimsever?

Or how her mom taught her all she knows about wielding a sword?

Or how her pops wanted her to be a hunter?
