My skyrim started looking like this a while ago, need help p

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:55 am

I don't know how to descibe my problem and I can't post links on this forum for whatever reason so i hope that someone follows my directions through Youtube correctly and helps me out lmfao... you need to find a user called "MoopletX" (Me) on Youtube and go to his video entitled "Skyrim Bug" I hope you can follow that... (sorry for the music in the background, I didn't know fraps was going to take the music i was listening to at the time too, lol)

(Carrying on..lol)

So I've been playing skyrim for 427 hours (so says steam) and it has never looked like this before.. I don't know what happened, I thought that a new mod that i had just put into my skyrim (real first person mod) might have caused the problem or maybe a messed up console command but i've taken "all" of my mods out and re-installed and re-downloaded skyrim from steam twice but it didn't change anything. I even found this "amd catalyst" program that was suposed to solve my problem, but that didn't work either...

My computer has 3, AMD Athlon™ II X3 435 Processors and an, AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series Video Card, and 4 GBs of RAM.. all of my drivers are up to date and my computer runs all other games/ programs perfectly fine..

I would really enjoy playing this game without my shadows and characters looking the way they do at the moment, I appreciate any help that anyone can offer..

That looks atrocious. No idea what it is but if I were you (and if you are patient) I would back up my save, delete the ini files, re-install the game (or restore it if you have it backed up), then follow the S.T.E.P. guide.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11

Be warned, this is a lengthy project but the results are amazing.

It looks like a problem with the shadows in your game. I don't really know a fix for that, but you should do what Angr Eeyore posted.

Ok so it's not just my Skyrim that has this problem (i haven't tried what Angry Eeyore said because i can't go over my download limit this month and i've already downloaded skyrim twice and Arma II) ... I just tried to play Magicka today and i get the same shadows as in my skyrim on all of the characters... they are all spiky and flickering, not normal at all... the games both run perfectly fine but these spiking shadows that flicker and glitch around are really irritating... I would really appreciate any help that anyone can offer...

PS; I really wish i could just post a link of my problems but this site does not allow me to... if anyone else can it would be awesome. lmao

Judging by the video I'd say it could be a graphics card issue, I'd open up my case and give the fans a clean out and make sure they're spinning properly.

I would start with downloading a new graphics card driver. Catalyst 12.2 WHQL is buggy with Skyrim.

Also post a dxdiag report.

Thankyou very much for taking the time to find my video lmao :) My computer says all of my drivers are up to date and I've recently added 2 new fans into my computer but that didn't cause any problems. they are all spinning flawlessly and my cpu is almost dust free, i don't think my problem is anything that easy to fix... lol thanks anyways for the idea, I apreciate any help :P.
I love both of these game and would very much like to play them without the shadows flickering and spiking around the screen.. and i don't even know if its just these 2 games (Magicka and Skyrim) it might be a ton of the games I play that are messed, but i don't know (I don't play every single game I own everyday)

I would start with downloading a new graphics card driver. Catalyst 12.2 WHQL is buggy with Skyrim.

Also post a dxdiag report.

I took catalyst out of my computer because it didn't solve my problem at all.
I'm not entirely sure what a "dxdiag report" is but I hope this is what you want (I'm not an expert at computers)
i ran Dxdiag in my computer and then saved whatever it did, and this is what i got lol. I hope thats right.

The issue looks like Artifacting, which could be drivers, but I mostly see it with overheating graphics cards. Try taking the 3d card out and cleaning it thoroughly.

Catalyst drivers are required to run your AMD/ATI graphics card. You cannot simply remove them. You could have removed the Control Center, however it seems that you have an fairly old version of the drivers: Catalyst 11.4 according to the driver dates.

Also you need appear to have two monitors connected which may cause issues especially with older drivers.

Most people seem to like Catalyst 12.1 here is the download link: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/12/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20Vista%20-%2064-Bit%20Edition&rev=12.1

Download the Catalyst Software Suite which includes the driver.

Sorry to say, but im sure if your graphics card is clean then its probally dying on you. You can try downloading CPUID HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) and see if its running too hot. If it is not, needs to be replaced, Sorry.

My graphics card is dying or overheating, I took off the case to my computer and tried playing Magicka again and there was no problem with the characters until i started casting tons of spells.. I just bought Diablo 3 and it was doing the same thing as my skyrim so i tried directing a small fan that i had lying around into my computer with the case open and now the game runs almost perfectly, (there are still some small blurbs of messed up grapgics, Magicka is still messed all around but I am going to get my graphics card cleaned out after this weekend to see if that fixes my problem. otherwise i think your right and my graphics card is dying. Temperature on my video card (with the case open and fan on it) is 58°C... it is very hot lol (that's when i'm not doing anything) with diablo 3 open my graphics card goes up to 64°C. THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR FIGURING MY PROBLEM OUT! I just got this card almost a year ago so i didn't think that it could be messing up/dying yet, but it looks like that is exactly what it is... :(

I appreciate all of the help, thankyou to everyone on this forum :P lmao... (i tried using steam forum before i made this forum account because that is how i bought the game but in the end i couldn't make an account lmfao)

58C or 64C is not very high for a GPU. Most graphics cards will function until about 100C. However, and this is big "however". The thermal diode is located on the GPU die and many overheating issues are caused by the GPU's onboard memory. Graphical artifacting/corruption is usually VRAM or driver related.

The unfortunate thing is that once your VRAM is showing symptoms of corruption then it is likely irreparable. A temporary fix is to let the GPU cool, however symptoms usually reappear once the GPU warms up.

A major issue with at least my experience from AMD graphics card is that the default fan settings allow the GPU to overheat more easily. Within the CCC or Vision Engine Control Center, go to Performance and then Graphics Overdrive. You must enable Graphics Override even if you are not overclocking. At the bottom of the page, check Enable Manual Fan Control then I suggest that you set it from a static 50% or so. Remember to click the Apply button. The graphics card will still increase beyond 50% when it hits a maximum threshold (within I believe is 95C), but the static setting will keep the idle and moderate use temperatures down.

Note: the default is 26% until the threshold is hit, then its 100% until is cools down to around 90C.

If you want to use a third party utility for the same purpose make sure to disable Manual Fan control in the CCC/VECC.

I had this exact phenomenon in Guildwars. Cause: Bad system memory and fried memory controller. The problem is at hardware level.

I tried so much on software level (drivers, settings, you name it) after I realized something was probably broken.

Did you overclock your cpu and/or gpu? Not sure how an AMD overclocks, increasing the busclock on an Intel usually results in memory clock increasing as well. And it might not react nicely to that. If not, I don't think that heat is causing this.

Overheated vram usually results in black pixels or mild artifacting around polygons, but nothing as rough as this. I get heat artifacting when overclocking my vcard, but nothing like this.

If you're running your hardware @stock speed, check your temps first. Judging from your temp indications, the videocard should be able to handle that. Amd/Nv cards can get close to 100 celsius before throttling back.

To be clear: it could very well be videoram that got too hot and then damaged ( as stated in post above). And if it's broken, well, it's time for a new videocard.

i've never overclocked my computer... I don't know if there is anything else to say about this one other than my hardware (video card) is broken, or really dusty...

PS: it seems the more I use my computer, the worse my graphics are getting... (Diablo III is doing the same thing as Skyrim now but worse, my buildings are going green in spots and casting these sharp flickering gitched shadow/ texture of whatever it's doing it to...)

Sounds to me like your graphics card is dying... :(
