Can I use the official texture DLC?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:23 am

Hi,

with the following rig:

Spoiler

AMD FX-8150
2x ATI HD 5850 1GB (Crossfire)
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
Corsair 4GB RAM 1600 mhz

I play at 1920x1200, and it works fine, but if I install the official texture pack the game is unplayable. (Mainly at exteriors)

Is there any way I can use the texture pack(the official one or any other that works fine) with y current rig?

Thank you, and forgive me if something is not understood, because I′m spanish.

Shouldn't be a problem as far as i see it but have you checked if everything is supported by Skyrim ?

Not necessarily. It really depends on you having a 64-bit OS rather than a 32-bit one. If you have a 32-bit OS, you can expect your game to crash, not immediately, but sooner rather than later.

Besides, it could begin to get crowded in your 1GB video RAM (2x Crossfire does not count here, it is still only 1GB effectively) and that might start slowing you down. Still, I can't say for sure where the actual threshold for that might be, and it may also depend on your use of mods, etc. Also, I fear that 4GB of RAM may be on the low side if one wants to fully support a large number of HR textures.

If you have a 64-bit OS, you can go for it and see how it works out.

And by the the way, it is not \spolier but /spoiler.

P.S.
Oh, and this just came to mind: You can always "subscribe" to it and have it downloaded to your PC, as the actual decision to use it is made in the Data Files section of the game launcher by checking the boxes for the two esp files that accompany the textures. The only downside is, that if you end up not wanting to use it and attempt to delete the four DLC files (2x .esp + 2x .bsa, which take up a bit more than 3 GB of disk space), Steam will always insist on updating them for you unless you contact Valve directly to have the DLC removed from your account.

I use Windows 7 64x.

Do you think it might be a problem of RAM?

Probably nothing significant, although I am under the general impression, that having a bit more might help to make some things work more efficiently. I am not an expert, so I can't tell you what that might be, exactly, but at least it would leave more resources available for system needs even after Skyrim takes all it can.

Still, If I were you, I would consider more RAM even if it might not be directly linked to any issues at the moment.

...and maybe give the mod 2k textures a try. I use the full version no trouble(as I have the 6870 1 gig) but they also offer a lite version of the 2k, which looks as good as the official texture pack

I've got a single 6850 1GB (Win7 x64) and I get close to 60FPS everywhere with the HD texture pack installed (granted I'm playing it on a 720p TV, so it's getting off easy).
