What's with the ''value'' on items?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:18 pm

If you look at an item in your inventory you can see what value the items has, the left eye of the falmer, for example, has 2500 value, but when i try to sell it to, let's say, Tonillia from the Thieves Guild i only get 830 for it.
Is there some way to get the same amount of money as th eitem in question is worth?
Thanks :P

New to the Elderscrolls series hmmmm? Well it works like this. Every item in the world has a base value like the Eye of the Falmer you mentioned. However, what vendors will pay you for it is linked to your speech craft and the perks you put into it. The higher your speech craft the better you get at selling and buying. You also get enchanted gear that gives better prices as well as potions.

However, don't stress about it too much as you'll end up with more gold than you can use anyway. Especially if you improve the thieves guild to it's former status. ;)

But the question was if you were able to sell something for as much as it is worth, though..
I never focused on speech so that is probably why i never realized it :P

At 0 Speech you buy items at 330% of base value and sell them at 30% of base value. At 100 Speech (no perks) this is 200% and 50% respectively.

If you have enough bartering bonus (speech perk, equipment, potion) you can sell at the listed, but never better.

Would you pay more for it than its worth?
No, then a merchant has to pay you less than its worth to be able to make a profit.

As mentioned, speech affects it. But a merchant will never buy your items for 100% of their value. Just like in real life, they buy low and sell high in order to make a profit.

My question was, is there a way to sell something with the value 2500 for 2500 septims. This is a game dude, you can steal clothes off people..

Everybody has to make money, say I'm a pawn shop. I buy skyrim for 40$, if I sell it for $40 I make no money. I have to sell it for more to make a profit.

Cheers

I wonder if there is a mod (or if one can be made) that will calculate what you would actually get at a merchant for an item based on your current speech skill, and any equipped items that affect price. Something that would maybe put that value next to the value stat of the item, maybe in parenthesis. Would be really helpful, I think.

There is a perk in the Speech tree which allows you to get better prices when dealing with merchants of the opposite six. With that perk, a high speech skill, the Gift of Charity blessing you get by giving a coin to a beggar, the Masque of Clavicus Vile and the Amulet of Zenithar, you can come very close to buying and selling at 100% value.
