Quest: First Lessons

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:14 am

I'm sure this question is probably asked over and over, but here's the situation:

I need 134 magicka to cast Fear, all i have is 100. I made Fortify magicka potions with Void Salts (?) and ectoplasm, and it only gave me +18 Magicka

Is there some other recipe i could use to gain sufficient magicka? or somewhere i can buy a scroll, potion or anything?

Thanks

Are you trying to pre-plan for what Faralda asks you to cast? If so, don't. It varies.... it's not always Fear. Out of 15 toons, I've had Fear only once. And my magicka was only 100, but since she sold me the spell, I shrugged and - guess what.... cast the spell where she pointed.

Don't overthink stuff.

[Spread over the other toons, I've had Magelight, Sparks, Frost, Flames.... something else on a couple, can't remember what now....]

Yep, it isn't always Fear like Serethil mentioned. In my playthrough I was asked to just cast Healing Hands.

Right. Just go up to Faralda, she'll tell you what she wants you to cast. If you know it, no problem. If you don't, say so, she'll sell you the spell (which is learned without any intervention on your part), then cast it. Don't overthink....

Yeah~ I just can't cast the spell with lack of magicka. that's why i was asking about +34 or better fortify magicka

Hmm... sorry then but I think that you need to wait a few levels. Remember to select Magicka each level until you have what you need.

Every time I've accepted the test (instead of the Dragonborn option), the spell required has always been something I've already learned. I thought that was always how it went *shrug*

Yeah, i guess just unlucky. but if i have to i can just spend two levels in magicka and then use +18 fortify just to cast it. lols

Well, it's never been a problem for me - the times I was asked to cast Fear, I bought the spell from her for 30 gold - and cast it with 100 magicka. I never up magicka since I don't really use it over the long haul - and actually, I've only been about level 7 any time I've started the mage's college.... I use one or the other destruction spell in left hand and war axe main-hand - until I get the Fire Breath shout, then I dual wield war axes.

[Oh.... I've never once been offered the "dragonborn" option.... Interesting.]

Check some vendors for a fortify magicka item or potion to buy. don't blow stat points that you don't really have to.

Could be, or it could be one of those quintessentially glitchy Bethesda things. Always some of those around.

Hmm, don't know why you wouldn't have that option unless you visited the College before you learned you were Dragonborn in the MQ

Nope. Current (15th) toon is the only one who's never progressed the MQ. All the others have been good little dragonborn....

The Dragonborn option comes up when you get to the part of the MQ where you're supposed to go ask Urag Gro-Shub about the location of Septimus Signus (at least I think that's what it was; I've only done the MQ once), if you haven't joined the College yet when you get there.

Faralda's asked me to cast Healing Hands, Magelight, and one other thing I forget because that's the only one I didn't need to buy from her first.

Oh, and your self-made Fortify Magicka potions will get better as you level Alchemy.

Ah. I always do it a lot sooner than that. Actually, I've only the one toon that ever got through the MQ. Once was fine.... though I really do need to go far enough to go back to Blackreach on some others. That was just remarkable!

^This. I havent played as a mage yet, so ive declared as dragonborn when ive gotten to the college three times now, and demonstrated my shout to gain membership. you have to get up to the ES part of the quest to be able to use shout for admittance though.
