Toughest Sidequest

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:23 am

So, last night I spent all of about three hours trekking over Skryim to locate and collect the Emerald and the Ivory Dragon claws with the Forbidden Legend quest... a good third of that was actually exploring, and the rest of it was the battle with myself, Lydia, and a Flame Atronarch against the assorted Draugur we faced. So after multiple deaths (most of which involved being shot in the groin with arrows as I was trying to get up from a Fus Do Rah shout), I finally managed to complete the quest and claim the amulet associated with it. It was fun, and I was wondering, are there any more quests similar to the Forbidden Legend quest that you have done and considered a fun challenge? I'm just curious to see what everyone else has to say about this sort of topic.

Good idea, I liked the challenge of the dungeon (when my Dunmer character was not turning into a living pincushion), so I'll try those out soon to see if they are any fun.

The end of Azuras for me.
Spoiler

3 Dremora mad spamming fireballs on you while an enemy mage with seemingly limitless mana spams his own lightning or what seems to be a super version of ice spike, all in what amounts to one room with nowhere to cover. Basically been reduced to chugging potions like a madman while frantically trying to down the Dremora then stabbing the dude (who heals and wards himself)

Notably, hes also the only NPC mage I've seen that alters his attacks to hit weaknesses when you summon stuff, often instakilling them.

Just finished up Azura's Daedric Shrine quest, and it was quite annoying to try and force my way through them as a battlemage. Got torn to bits even at level 25.

Yeah, that was the hardest for me too. I'm not proud of this, but after dying so many times I turned the difficulty down to Easy and went to town. They dropped like flies.

I thought of doing that as well, but my stubborn self did not allow me to turn down the difficulty. So during the fight with the bow user (avoiding spoilers), I was killed maybe... twelve times or so. Unrelenting Force didn't really effect him, and Lydia was either being slung into walls or crouching on the ground, trying to recover.

One of the Thieves Guild dungeon crawls was really a challenge for me, may be easier for a different build tho

Spoiler

The quest where you go with Kariah and Brynjolf to kill Mercer Fey. The dungeon was packed with Falmer and Charus and ended with a good fight. Was fun fighting with two competent followers and many rooms had moyer then the typical amount of enemies.

I also got a good challenge out of the final battle in the dungeon crawl for The Break of Dawn. That necromancer was a [censored]

It was one of those random go to X to learn shout Y quests...i'll just say the dungeon i had to go to was occupied by fire mages and i was playing a vampire. :banghead:
Even without my characters obvious flaw it would've still been nasty in there.

Ouch. 100% Vampirism would have been even worse no doubt.

Same here, and then the five of them would aim arrows at me and pincushion my body as I tried to get back up... and get blown away again by another Unrelenting Force shout.

How about deciding to take a shortcut over the mountains from Whiterun to Windhelm and running into Shearpoint, and thinking "Hmmm, what's that over there? Ooooo. A word wall! And a dragon! And he's sleeping. Maybe I can sneak up behind him and lay the smack down." and Lydia says, "I've got a bad feeling about this." Why didn't I listen? There is nothing like dealing with a lich named Krosis who starts flinging fireballs AND a frosty blood dragon at the same time, not to mention the cave bear that decides to turn the entire thing into an even bigger Charlie Foxtrot. :ahhh: Going through enough healing potions, stamina potions, and magika potions to choke a horse. I'm really glad I wasn't playing on Master level. I barely survived it on Adept. I fortunately knew enough to use my fire shout on the dragon :flamethrower: , and use shock on the undead dragon priest :shocking: . Lydia went down for the 9 count at least twice. BTW. Lvl 21. I'm really glad I upgraded to elven armor (flawless) before that -- thank you Khajiit thief.

Then immediately afterward while I was catching my breath, a wolf attacks... Lydia got it with an arrow -- it sounded like a sniper rifle fired -- headshot. I would have been toast with one hit. And on the way into Windhelm, at Ange's Mill I almost was killed by a mudcrab while a Courier was delivering this oh so important message in a conversation I couldn't break out of. Lydia was nowhere to be found. Probably was trying to pick her way down the mountain.

That was my toughest quest so far in the game.---- this playthrough.

Last playthrough... aborted due to bug... You know how sometimes we do stupid things? Like thinking we actually have to be the big game hunter to get the mammoth tusk for Modesi? Well, I thought I had to kill it. It took an hour. First I had to deal with the giant, and this is where I found out how far a giant can drive the Dovakiin: 300 m. I swear he his shirt said "Bonds" on the back and San Francisco on the front. Reload. Then this time be a tiny bit more intelligent managed to actually draw the mammoth away from the giant I found out how fast they are. But I got one down, and then found out that the giant does try to retrieve his prized possessions and doesn't take too kindly to having Betsy killed. 300 m. Reload. I know what you're thinking. Wiley Coyote. So I opened my Acme Catalog and checked for the latest strategies and now familiar with the terrain figured how to get one of them blocked so I only had to take one at a time, and I ordered some poison. One mammoth down, tusk gone. used whirlwind and ran like hell. Beep! Beep! :bolt:

This time I just bought the tusk.

Wow, bet you had fun killing all of them :). Sounds like what happened when I busy butchering goats a good half mile away from Windhelm when a Blood Dragon swooped down and started nibbling on Lydia.

I hope many more people can post what was their hardest sidequest or something similar to that.

Do you know how long it took me to chase down the White Stag for the Ill met by Moonlight quest?! The werewolf killing was a breeze compared with trying to run down this animal that sprinted away everytime i got withing 10ft of it. It would sprint away and i would to sprint to keep up with it then ran out of stamina and it still kept running. I didn't have any real skill in ranged attacks like archery or magic as i was mainly a melee fighter. Had to go away, level up some archery, came back and headshot from miles away on the top of a hill took care of the pesky creature :D

The unnamed quest in the game that plagues you from point of puchase to the end of your game time - Everything on the freaking planet hates your horse and your horse has more than it's fair share of unciommon valor in certain situations , then inexplicably runs off in lesser situations in the middle of the night turning a battle into a blind lost and found mini-game.

That must have been extremely fulfilling to finally take down the blasted thing :). Why no Unrelenting Force shout though to send it flying into the nearest tree?
