Safe place to store my gear early in the game?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:55 am

Hello, I dont have enough gold to buy a house yet, but there is lots of extra stuff in my bags, eating at the carrying weight capacity - mostly crafting materials - ores, skins, alchemy items... I need to put them in some safe place without the risk of losing them - any tips for a safe and secure place which they wont disappear from? thanks

Outside the Warmaidens, there are two barrels where you can safely store stuff until you get a house. Keep in mind that if you are going to oufit Breezehome, you will need about another 2000 in gold on top of the 5000 price tag.

Yeah, but for just the 5000 you get one chest in the bedroom, which should be sufficient for however long it takes you to make the money to buy other decorations.

If you want a place with a bed to sleep in as well, the Alchemist's Shack (along the road between Helgen and Ivarstead) has an End Table that is safe storage.

There is a house you can get for free right away in Markarth from the "House of Horrors" quest.

Nothing in the house respawns, and there are a bunch of containers.

That is usually the first house I use until I buy a more suitable one.

Talk to the Vigilant of Stendarr who asks you if you have seen anyone entering or leaving an abandoned house.

I actually used the barrels there before, but if you don't go back to Whiterun after a month or so, the barrels reset and you lose your stuff. I lost all my crafting mats after a stint in the Dragonreach prison :(

You're given a free room in the college at Winterhold. You can store stuff there indefinitely.

Ive been using those barrels since the beginning of the game and I'm now level 47 - never lost anything from them. I kept stuff there for the longest time because the blacksmith was right there, has the most money in town to sell things to (next to the other blacksmith) and I took up blacksmithing with this character so I keep all my blacksmith ingots there. Eventually I had extra money and bought breeze home...

The Barrels outside warmadies will work as I've used them myself but only if you go back to the city often. If you spend a long time away they can re-set. You can avoid losing your stuff but it's not 100%.

It's somewhat worth noting that I purchased Honeyside this time when I only had 5174g in my pockets (instead of the usual fee of 8000g). The steward just took all the money and gave me the key.

Just for the case that you're getting sick of Breezehome as the standard starting house.

Whoa, Whoa, These Barrels reset? Could you be a bit more clear? What defines "long time away" in Skyrim?
Is it the same with RL where Long Term = over 6 Months?

I stored all my unsellable items (Keys,Torches) in an End Table in Riften Castle, lol. Would be interesting to see these unsellable items disappear.

I did not know that, oh well I had Breezehome well before those barrels would have reset so if Whiterun is your main base it works out well. Another good one to use on a temporary basis is Alva's house in Morthal after you finish "Laid to Rest", however it does reset so I wouldn't leave anything too important in those chests. It's nice little pit stop if you are doing things up that way, and there are no houses to buy in that region.

p.s. If Hroggar Is still alive make sure to only go in when he's working the mill, or if it's unlocked early in the evening. Otherwise he'll become hostile and you'll have to kill him.

You get free lodging and storage in Riverwood after you escape Helgen , the family that houses you all depends on who you followed out

Any of the guilds will give you a bed and storage (companions, thieves, Db, mages) right after joining

The Alchemists shack is a good place to find, the bedside table doesn't appear to respawn so you can keep all your gear in there, not to mention it has an Alchemy table which is handy too. Its a bit breezy and run down but I call it home.

when u escape ur are following a person.....
follow that person and it will get u a place to sleep and store stuff.

so just follow the friend of one or the uncle of the other, their houses are safe to store whatever u want.

As I understand you have to be 10 days away from an cell for it to reload so it will newer reload if you use Whiterun as an base and return regularly.
Anyway 10 days is enough for you to get 5000 for the house.
