Ok so I got Volendrung awhile ago... and sometimes the whole entire warhammer pulses red, and other times only the small red gem in the center of it flashes red.

I've already ruled out the possibility that the current soul energy charge has anything to do with it.

Lately my theory has become that the whole hammer pulses when you're in combat or there are enemy's nearby, as if to signify the warhammer's lust for battle. I'll need to do some more testing on this.

Or it could just be completely random. Does anyone know?

Dunno about the glowing, but what I wonder about is that Volendrung is listed as a daedric artifact, but the trivia screen that comes up in between loading times says is was created by the dwemer. That just doesn't add up.

It's counted as a daedrice artifact.. Yet, it doesn't count as a daedrice artifact when it comes to the trophy/achievement. It's strange.
