How to know when it's over?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 2:55 pm

Too bad, I still want more game experience. I really enjoyed leveling my guys, exploring all the holds, and I thought most of the quests were nicely done stories and a great challenge. But after 300 hours, I think I'm finished.

I'm thane everywhere, own houses there, too. I've got a horse in every stable, Frost and Shadowmere, too. All the shouts, used them all, too. I'm the head of the Thieves guild, Dark Brotherhood (except for Mother, course), harbinger of the Companions and the Archmage of Winterhold, too. I've done all these as a warrior, as a thief and as a mage, too. I've learned to conjure Dremora as a warrior, shield block as a thief, and wear Daedric armor as a mage, too. I've walked west from Solitude, south from Riften, north from Winterhold and east from Windhelm, too and found no one left to talk to. I can make poisons that can one-shot a dragon, enchant an iron dagger to a gazillion DPS, and lockpick my way into Oblivion, too. I've married three women, and even attempted to marry Farkas, too.

The fat lady has sung! Oh, well ... Kingdoms of Amalur, coming soon.

Try a different type of character. I'm personally a big warrior so I will go with battle mage next, then a sneaky assassin. Its all about exploring multiple routes and trying different things. Its never over, unless your imagination runs out. Then you just watch old movies and play old games till you think of your next move. With over 120 hours into perfecting my character, I’m no where near your point nor to the point of nothing new to do. Either way, I say build a new and completely different character or play something else until you get some ideas for a new character. This game only goes as deep as you will allow yourself to go. Don't hold back, and be sure to try all outlets.

I also stopped playing Skyrim not because I feel liked I did all I could, but because I just got bored with Skyrim. I'll start playing again when the DLC comes out till then I'm done with Skyrim.

Sad that you don't appreciate this magnificent game as much as the rest of us. :(

It's just a game. If it gets boring find something else to do. You got a good run for the price so be happy with that. No game lasts forever no matter how open and flexible it is. Sooner or later you'll realise that you've seen most of it already, done most of it already and the thought of going into Laberintian for the 20th time makes you hurt all over. NPCS start sounding like broken records, shopkeepers don't have anything you want or need and the novelty of killing your wife and raising her as a thrall has worn off long ago.

So yeah, if it's over, it's over. You may or may not play it again later on when the CK has been out a while and a lot of extra content is available or some DLC might draw you back. But there's no unspoken rule that says you have to play this game for the rest of your life. ;)

Sounds like you're just not being creative enough. Being bored of the game is one thing, but you're actually saying you've run out of things to do? I find that hard to believe. Perhaps your experience is being stretched out so easily because you're steam rolling the game, or perhaps fast traveling too much? As for characters, there's more than just 3 types, (Warrior, Mage, Thief), there's SO many types of characters you can make, and a whole 10 Races. In fact, I've yet to beat the Main Quest or Civil War or bought any houses besides Whiterun. I've yet to do more than 2 Daedric Quests, and I still need to beat the Companions. I've yet to become a Vampire on any character. I've yet to experience alot of things. Still plenty of side quests for me to do. And I have around 200 hours put into this game so far.

Some characters I've made:

Female Nord Assassin who uses Sneak/Lockpicking/Pickpocket/Alchemy/One-Handed (Daggers)/Illusion/Speech/Light Armor. Doesn't touch any of the other skills at all. Thieve's Guildmaster and partially completed a few Side Quests and Dark Btrotherhood quests. Mehrune's Dagon quest also completed.

Male Khajiit Fist Fighter who uses Heavy Armor gloves, and a Circlet/Trousers/Shoes (Clothing), has so far Liberated Skyrim, and done a few Side Quests, and a bit of the Main Quest. Has been doing alot of exploring. Uses fists, a bit of sneak only when absolutely REQUIRED (He is a khajiit after all), smithing to make said gloves, and enchanting to get the best out of unarmed enchants. Otherwise, he just runs in and punches things in the face, violently. Tries to NEVER steals or pickpockets or does anything illegal.

Male Dunmer Spellswordsman who uses Bound Weapons and summons Undead. He also uses Poisons. Doesn't care about being a good or bad person either, he'll help people out but just as easily slit people's throats if money is involved.

Male Argonian Paladin/Knight hybrid whom uses Mace/Shield, Heavy Armor, Restoration magic, a bit of Alteration. No enchanting or smithing. Alchemy for potions only. Is more of a Hero, would never kill innocents or commit crimes. Fighting for the Imperials and destroying the dark brotherhood. Some of the main quest completed, but mostly focuses on doing misc. tasks and side quests to help people.

Orc Berserker who uses Heavy Armor and 2-handed Battleaxes, and smiths.

Breton Female who roleplays in Forsworn armor and dual wield swords.

Altmer Male who uses Cloth only, Enchanting/Destruction/Illusion/Alteration/Restoration. Never uses weapons, never sneaks around. Archmage.

I still have a ridiculous amount of ideas to go.

^this

building on that, i also play what i call "normal people" , there lives dont revolve around glory and combat no, indeed they are farmers, miners, woodcutters, but even things that require a lot of imaginaiton liike somebody who tells an npc's future or sells basckets at a merket stool! ( in fact you can be pretty much anything you can think off!)

however, to me it osunds like your a person who has very little imgination, you can look at skyrim in 2 ways, the first way is that you do 0 roleplay, and "do" eveything, and you dont go into any depth of the game, the other way is to roleplay, and in turn to immerse yourself i nthe game.

games like skyrim never have an ending, i understand where oyur ocmeing from about how oyu just know whats going to happen, i got that in OB after a few years...but if so just take a break form it for a bit, or approach the game differantly!

Some people like to be told a story. Other people like to tell their own stories.

People who like to be told a story will "beat" an Elder Scrolls game. People who like to tell their own stories will play an Elder Scrolls game for years.

I keep myself occupied by playing as lots of different characters, each doing different things, making different decisions, using different weapons, etc. I had a different character for each guild on Oblivion, and I've been heading the same way with Skyrim. On Oblivion, I even had a guy who just went from city to city, gathering ingredients, making potions, and selling them. That was still interesting, because I never fast travelled, so he saw lots of crazy stuff along the way :)

I think this game stays fun for as long as you make it; you just need to create your own stories within the game :)

600+ hrs in and it never ends for me. I love it so much I keep every character in a different save file and create a new one. Right now I'm level 16 Bosmer. I just saved a level 40 Altmer and will eventually go back to that. With Kingdoms of Amular: Reckoning coming Feb 7th and then Mass Effect coming March 6th, I've got the next three months pretty pegged out. I don't know when I'm going to play them all considering I'm editing two novels and work full time. But hey, I just have to set limits. Each day play a different game or edit my novels. I'm self published so that is easier to do.

I defeated Alduin and...honestly, a part of me feels like most of the game has finished for me.

I may do some of the more important quests but it was a BIG deal that left me kind of deflated.

I also feel kind of cheated I wasn't allowed to solo him.

I don't see why people are suddenly accusing the OP of having a lack of imagination. He played for 300 hours before reaching this point. Some people can spend 100 hours just gathering herbs. Others play the game to discover new things and build up characters. 300 Hours are a lot of time to spend on one game. If you break it down it means he played this game for 8 hours a day for the last 38 days. It's bound to get old at that rate. He might come up with new things to try while away from the game for a while but really, no amount of imagination will make Skyrim look different today than it did yesterday. You might die differently or do things in a different order but eventually you'll end up with nothing new to see. Best way to cure that is time out.

300 hours in and I completed the main quest + civil war. I havent played in a while either. It sort of seemed like a slap in the face when I realized that nothing I did up to that point mattered in the world. I walked around with the feeling that nothing has changed. Ulfrics body was still laying there after days, Elesif didnt acknowledge that Imperials won, no one cares that Alduin was defeated except a few guards, I cant rid the land of stormcloaks because the generals are invincible. I wish I never completed these story arcs....it truly turned me off to this game. It is hard for me to start another character knowing that whatever I do, doesn't matter.

You sir, have lived. :D So does farkas cook well?

300 hours shows you're pretty dedicated to the game. After so much time it's not exactly bad to be tiring of the game a little.
This sort of game seems to be of the type that a person will play to death for a while, then put on a shelf to gather dust. Then one day they'll play it again just to reminisce and think 'Holy crap this game is amazing' and get back into it again.

It's a bit like booze. Leave it alone for a little while and when you come back to it it'll be even more potent.

Definitely agree with this; I basically did that with Oblivion :)

Ha, I live in Bethesda's world. I haven't seen the Main Quest yet for Skyrim after 317 hours but I'm very close to turning my attention to it. I tend to enjoy the building of a character a lot and when the back of my mind turns to thinking of a new character, that's when I know. I move from world to world though. Whether it's Cyrodiil, the DC wasteland, the Mojave wasteland or Skryim, I always have a lot to explore and many different ways to do it as many different people. I still have DLC for the other games I haven't ever done...there's always a lot to do. And don't even think about mods...there's just not enough time to do it all. Have fun whatever you do next! I think you'll be doing Skyrim again when you're ready. :) I occasionally do something like Portal2 also.

Eventually, everyone gets to the point where they're "finished" with any game. Granted, for most people that's usually several months down the line, by hey, everyone's different. The day will come when I've had enough of Skyrim, or perhaps some other game will peak my interest more, but it is not this day.

Honestly not sure what the point of posting in the first place was though...

Oh, and 300 hours isn't really THAT much. I remember a long time ago when I was playing Everquest, I did a /played on my druid, and was shocked to see it read over 120 DAYS. 120 days is 2880 hours. Of course, this was over 3 years or so, but I played quite a bit more after that, too. I'd be curious what it sits at now... next time they offer free play time, I think I'll load it back up and check, just for sh**s and grins.

You have 300 hours in less than two months. Maybe if you had dragged it out... a bit..... you would have enjoyed it more, and been able to continue? BTW, it doesn't sound like you have tried the bare handed "bad a** viking" run-through. Maybe give it a whirl while you wait for Amalur?
