Farmer taking cow to Giants : V

No, he just gets owned by the giants, they kill him and the cow.

It's totally random, though I've seen it most often either on the road from Riverwood to Whiterun, or west of Whiterun heading toward Rorikstead.

I'd suggest you just run the roads around the basin between Rorikstead/Whiterun/Riverwood. Eventually you should see it.

For me it was between the bridge between riverwood and whiterun, and the whiterun watchtower where it splits off in a Y
