Disease notification

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 1:34 pm

I was just reading the buglist (finally had it pointed out to me) over on the PC hardware forum and lo and behold I get to "New diseases can easily catch players off guard, as the text notification may either not appear or not last long enough."

When the heck has there ever been a notification - in Skyrim? I've been meaning to post about it, that the only tip-off was NPC conversation mentioning that you don't look well, and then confirmation when you happen to check your list of active effects. Maybe there ought to be an on-screen icon? One disease had me at a 50% dimished health (for I don't know how long) but when healing myself, the health bar would go to the full 100% - rather than part way and getting stuck, as I would expect if I was ill. For that matter, what happened to the "Cure Disease" spell?

On a somewhat similar note, shouldn't you get a noticeable penalty for NOT sleeping instead of a "rested" bonus - that doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the game, tutorial or manual. I only found out that it was a requirement for contact by the Dark Brotherhood after checking on the wiki, since I hadn't found them on my own. Just a black handprint on a couriered note, and a contract found on a lone, inept assassin. Maybe in time someone will duplicate the "Necessities of Morrowind" mod, that required eating, drinking and sleeping on a regular basis?

You do get a notification, but it goes by very quickly and since it's usually in combat, is easy to miss.

I was on my way to Whiterun from Riverwood (which I keep wanting to call Riverrun, from Game of Thrones) when a wolf attacked me and I saw "You have contracted Rockjoint." I dont recall how long it was on the screen, though.

Yeah, i've seen it a couple of times when fighting certain creatures, (vampires, huskers, wolves, etc.) but it goes by very quick and it's easy to miss. I know thatf or a fact, as the only clue I've gotten a few times is when an NPC says to me. "You look ill."
I kinda like that, it's like extra insurance that you'll check yourself out.

It happened to me as well... I got a disease while fighting and the notification never showed up. I took the habit of looking at the constant effect page.

I've never noticed the notification on PC (after 150 hours), so no doubt there is a bug.

It seems odd that there's no persistent visual indication. In real life, when I'm ill, I'm normally aware of it!

I've learned to check Active Effects after melee with high-risk foes (especially vampires, as the consequence of ignoring their infection is even more serious).

^ This made me chuckle.

The notifications have always appeared for me, but because over half of them appear in combat, they can be easily missed. I'm not sure that it's a bug that they don't show up, again I think it's just that people are missing them in combat.

Then again, the only time I really paid attention to whether or not I caught anything was when I was trying to become a Vampire. I paid attention to that.

heh heh heh

Go into the Menu, and go over to Magic. Scroll down to Active Effects. If you have caught a Disease, it will appear in red in Active Effects.

As far as curing said disease, either down a Cure Disease potion or visit any Shrine to any of the Divines (including the one to Talos outside of Dragonsreach). Simply activate the Shrine and poof, all diseases cured!

No more herpes for you!
