Hey guys! This is my first elder scrolls and proper RPG game, ( I love FO3 and FONV) Im still level one and a bit unsure on a few things! Does the race of your character matter? Where is the first house I can get? Apart from the obvious what is the difference between going warrior, Mage and thief! I'm a bit confused by the perk tree! Why wouldnt I want a pek every level, why wait? What should I collect to get money! Are there things you always do and why? Are there things you never do and why! What are the best perks/skills and why! I've read though some of the wiki to check out the perks but there are so many of them and as I've never played before I'm not sure which ones I should aim to get later on and which ones I should get now! Any input will be greatly accepted! Thank you Skyrim community! :)

Hi Newb! I love all those games too.

Each race has a bonus skill/power which is shown to you in the Character Creator when you are making your character. My character is a Breton because I love the magic benefits.

Saving a perk might be a good idea if there's a perk you want but you're just short of the requirement for it. :tes:

Race of your character only matters if you want a boost in some certain skills at the beginning. First house you can get is in Whiterun after completing some quests for the Jarl. And the perks are spent on whatever playstyle you want to major in; sneak/stealth, mage, or combat.

Hope that helped! :)

You're choice of race will determine two things besides appearance. 1. is skill bonuses. Some races are better at certain skills than others. The boost isn't that big though, so you shouldn't worry too much about that. The second thing unique to each race is powers. There are two kinds of powers; those that can be used once a day(usually they are like spells you'll find in game, but without any magicka cost), and those that are always active, such as increased magicka, fire resistance, etc..

Most likely the first big city you'll come to is Whiterun. The cheapest player home is there right next to the blacksmith. You'll need to do quests for the Jarls (think of them as governors or kings of individual cities) before you can buy houses.

Warriors are primarily concerned with using weapons to combat the enemy face to face. Thieves primarily use stealth to get their tasks (back-stabbing, pick-pocketing, lock picking) while avoiding confrontation. Mages use magicka to cast spells. The uses for skills are varied and versatile, and there are many schools of magic that spells are categorized into based on their main function.

Perks work kind of like they do in Fallout. You get one perk point to spend every time you level up, though you don't need to spend it right away if you don't want to. There are perks for each skill. Also when you level up, you get to choose to increase either your health, stamina(used for power attacks and sprinting), or magicka(used for casting spells).

Weapons, armor, and jewlery are the main money makers in Skyrim. Any of those Items with an enchantment (a bonus effect) will be worth a lot more than the regular version. Most enemies you'll fight will have small amounts of gold on them.

As for what to do/ don't do; DO: Save early and often. You never know what might happen. DON'T: try fighting giants at an early level. They'll send you sky high in one hit.

Concerning perks and skills, that will be up to you to decide. As for fighting, your options will consist of weapons that use one hand, weapons that use two hands, bows and arrows, fire, ice and lightning magic, and summons. You're armors will either be heavy, light, mage robes, or clothing.
Smithing is used to make new armor.
Enchanting is used to add enchantments (bonus effects) to both armor and weapons.
Like in Fallout, you also have your sneaking, speech, pickpocket, and lock picking skills.
For magic, you have Destruction(damaging magic), Conjuration(summoning monsters to fight for you, raising zombies to fight for you, and summoning magic weapons), Illusion(changing enemy behavior), Alteration (varied uses) and Restoration(healing).
There's also Alchemy, which is like the survival skill in Fallout. It allows you to craft one-use healing items and poisons you can put on weapons to boost their damage.

I'm sure there's a skill or two I've forgotten, but I'm sure someone else can fill you in on those.

What ever perk you want there are multiple perks for combat all depends on what combat style you want as in do like two handed weapons better then one handed weapons, you could combine magic with combat its all up to you

I too loved FO3 and FONV. you can be a cannibal in this game too.

there are standing stones that also add a benefit to your character.

as you escape helgen you pass by 3 standing stones.

warrior stone increases warrior skills 20% faster
mage stone increases mage skills 20% faster
thief stone increases thief skills 20% faster.

as you explore you will find more standing stones and you can change to the new standing stone benefit any time.

have your character try everything and just HAVE FUN!!!!

When will people realize that no choices you make in the Elder Scrolls Games when it comes to race, gender, good, bad ever matters? Even more so with "class". You just play. You do what you want. There's no one to tell you how to play, though you might discover that you get easily mauled due to the choices you make. But whee, you don't have to fight tough NPC's.

As a low-level warrior, I'd advise using archery whenever you can, to improve that skill. Maybe invest in archery perks, too.

The reason is that mobs can easily overwhelm you in melee unless you take one or two out first.

My dilemma was that investment in Health means rubbish melee attacks, but investment in Stamina results in getting killed a lot.

At higher levels, with a good investment in both Health and Stamina, melee is a lot easier.

Yeah, that's why using both weapons and magic is pretty messed up heh.

Well, choices about class DO matter. Especially in Skyrim. In the previous games you could still level up your minor skills and kick ass, but now if you try to be like a certain Thief of Virtue and take your first perks in pickpocket, lockpicking and speech, you're screwed.

As for character customization, I agree. However, racial abilities can prove useful in a game when Night Eye is no longer a spell :)
