Smithing - Mandatory?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 8:52 pm

Anyone else feels like Smithing is Mandatory for Barbarian-type characters? Is it even possible to have Ebony and Daedric if you don't make them yourself?

Yes at high levels ebony is common loot, but daedric is always rare. You need to be ~level 40+ to be able to find daedric.

Smithing is never mandatory, but you can get higher level armor and weaponry sooner if you use it.

Shouldn't barbarian type characters technically be wearing light armor? I thought Barbarians tend to use things like fur and leather in their armor.

Yeah Daedric seems to be really rare, I'm at level 61 and haven't come across much at all. I started off leveling my smithing skill thinking I would make ebony and daedric weapons and armor but then came to realize that this would really destroy any sense of discovery and dungeon crawling so even though I have the perks the make them I only upgrade the weapons and armor I find.

I hate the fact NPC's can't improve and enchant armor for you....I don't want MY ARGONAIN GOING INTO SMITHING JUST BECAUSE HE LIKES TO STICK WITH SCALE AND HIDE.

Well hate is a pretty strong word but I do agree, they should have implemented pay for smithing/enchanting services.

Well, there has to be some incentive to go into the tree yourself. I'd support NPC's upgrading weapons and armor up to, say, flawless quality, though.

If there was pay for improving/enchanting...

then those perk trees would do nothing but save(/make) you money.

Then who would have leveled their smithing/enchanting skills?

Yeah I think this is Bethesda's reason for not putting it in, but they could have made it on the expensive side so that there would be some benefit to do-it-yourself.

The incentive should be that you can do it on your own and for free. I wouldn't mind exuberant prices for the NPC's to do it.

Well it depends. My Barbarian uses a shield + 1h Axe + Forsworn Armor. The thing is I'm tempted to put some perks in smithing because I'm level 38 and still fighting with a Dwarven Shield :/

There is a bit of a problem with replacing those skill trees with paid services. To keep balance, they'd have to be very expensive, or it wouldn't be worth taking the skill. However, if they were very expensive, there would be "game logic" problems in that it wouldn't mesh with the rest of the in-game economy. Every NPC should become a smith and earn 10 grand per legendary upgrade.

Edit: others made the same point...

Those who cant afford it. They could have made it costly to do. Why level your alchemy skill when you can just buy potions....cause they are pretty expensive (the good ones anyways).

Having 100 Smithing skill? yes.

Blowing perks to make Dadric? Completely optional.

I wish I didn't delete my last character that ran up the Heavy Armor side of the smithing tree, but my current character there is only five points damage difference between Skyforge Steel (133) and Glass (138) swords.

Not if there is only one Master Smither in Skyrim. Make him hard to find, make it hard to earn his trust (some hard quests) and make his service VERY costly and that's it. Much better having a hard way option than nothing at all :/

I would of liked a pay for service for enchanting be it expensive, time consuming or resource intensive.

My warrior and thief will never know such delights :(

Someone who claims to be level 61 and hasn't skilled up smithing is fibbing. It's not that you need the products of smithing to get to that level, but you can't ignore entire skills and get there. To get past 60 you have to have substantial skill levels in all skills.

It is certainly not "MANDITORY" as you can play the game and never smith an item at all. Will you certainly not be uber-powerful without the smithed items, but the game is still playable (obviously you will have ot play it differently, but it coudl be done).

Now if you want to play thru entirely on MASTER difficulty, it may be "HIGHLY RECOMENDED"....
