New to ES games;Troubles with the first dragon

I'm new to the Elder Scrolls game so a bit of a newb. Having troubles with the first dragon murmilir or however you spell it, even though I ve seen videos of people having little to no issues with it. Currently level 10 with about 10 and a half hours of game time. Took my time exploring and stuff, been through bleak falls barrow with no difficulty and brittleshin pass and embershard mine. Sword and shield warrior doing about 18 damage with a superior steel sword with about 100 armor rating. Kinda ill equipped for the fight as i forgot to pack some potions.

Usually the 4 guards go down pretty quick leaving me and irrelith. Try to hit it a few times with orcish bow with steel arrows a few times before it lands and go in to melee but that doesnt end well. His flame thrower usually takes me down to half life then i use up my few potions of health i have. Run -> heal then go at it again but i usually die from his flame thrower and bite combo. What am i doing wrong >_<

From my experience, the guards seem to do most of the work on your first dragon. Irrelith can't die so your fall back position is to just use your bow and try and keep away from the dragon while she kills it. If you want to be more aggressive, you can try and melee the dragon from the side. Also, to conserve potions, use your healing spell to restore your life while the dragon is flying.

When dragons land and you are a mellee fighter try to get aroung to the side of them.
Stay away from there tail and head thats where they hit you the hardest.
If you made a save before you went there you can get some resist fire potions from Arcadia.

What difficulty are you playing on?

If you are having a really hard time, I would suggest using your Orcish bow for most of the fight, just stay close to some cover so you can use it to block his fire attacks.

Or if you really want to mainly use melee, just make sure you have some health and stamina potions on hand, sprint out of his fire attacks and go for his side like Angry Orc said. It would also be wise to always have some cover near by so you can easily get out of his attack path quickly.
