Textures

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:53 am

Now before I say anything that may offend, let me start by saying that I think rage will be a great game; however, there is something I want to get out into the open. Why are the textures so blurry looking? The megatextue technology is awsome, but is it to much to ask for a little detail in the textures? I know I sound like a pretentious graphics guru with a $5,000 pc, but personally being a texture artist myself I can't help but feel a little dissapointed. Overall the game looks supurb, but it leaves something to be desired. As I am writting this negative questions are coming to mind about the future of gaming. Are video games drifting to pure eye candy (crysis)? Does anyone else feel the same way? Can someone put my mind at ease?

P.S. Do you think the comparisons drawn between rage, boarderlands, and fallout are going to hurt rage or help it?

I'm pretty sure the only footage they've shown is from the 360. We don't know what the game looks like fully maxed on the PC.

The game looks gorgeous, not sure how a game could look "superb" if the texture quality was blurry. If you look at textures in the game they look some of the most detailed i have ever seen. The sheer detail in these envrionments is why the game is getting such applause for it's graphics. It's not lighting, it's not polygon counts, it's not particle fx..it's because the detailed and art direction of these environments are something no one has seen in a game before. But yes hopefully when the finish the game I hope they do not have to compress the textures down yet again to fit them in 2 CDs on the xbox360. I hope for the PC version, we are given an option to have the least possible compression--I would be willing to give up 250Gigs of room for this :).

oh perhaps some of the bluriness you are sensitive to may be from the Depth of Field stuff they are doing?

I think RAGE was nominated for e3s best graphics award because the game looks awesome and that isn't possible with blurry textures (I guess :P)

If id follow the trend, they won't included TGA for 'high' quality, it'll be DDS all the way.

@ steelbread: you know what 'detail' textures are right? idtech (tends not to) doesn't use them, which is why textures looks slightly more pixelated than other games that do. They're a nice cheap trick to make gamers think textures are more detailed than they appear to be

I remember reading somewhere that the game on the 360 would be somewhat limited in the graphics department because of the 360's DVD disk space. Now if you consider how amazing the footage looks from the 360 demos, one can only imagine how awesome this will look on a gaming PC running on full. It makes me wonder if they will be releasing this on multiple disks for the 360, because this will be the version I play. I know there was some criticisms of Microsoft software publication policies and it not being cost effective to release a game on multiple disks.

Any official word on how many disks this will be on?

I believe it's been said that the 360 will come on 2 DVDs. 1 for the wasteland area and the other for the Subway/Metroplis Area. I just hope id gives us an option for the PC users to download lesser compressed textures. Not sure what their strat would be with PS3--no storage issue with Blu-Ray, but not sure if they would want to give PS3 users and advantage over xbox360 folks.

This is good news because I thought they were significantly going to dumb down this game for the 360. Thanks.

He did.. .but that wasn't even a gaming computer, it was a workstation. Doesn't really say much about the final version of the game.

I mean those are both award winning games I mean I can 't see why the comparison could be bad. But I can see a loss of identity once game gets closer to release so that they can stand form boarderlands and fallout and or better them self's form these great games in which they draw comparison to

I disagree.

I do not think the graphics have "blurry" colors--You might need glasses-- which the only thing I have noticed, is the colors really pop, They stand out. I saw a sewer that looked "clean" in Rage. I don't know if it was suppose to look that way.

If you ever go into a dusty old warehouse and start moving around or in a sewer evenly. If you really are moving around and kicking up enough dust, there comes a haze of dust. Kinda like a smokey bar...
There is just a nice thin layer of smoke on the ceiling. Same instance with dust, you get a hazey off brown color and with light refracting inside the dust.

I would have to agree with you on this one ! There are several images I saw that i noticed the lack in texture work. While the over lighting in the game is great! The textures are blurry as sin.
Take a look at this image. As you can see my poorly circle work.
Go to the direct link and follow the guide !

If you dis-agree I will give more pictures showing how terrible the texture work is.

Yellow : The chain is a Sprite which is a joke!
Green : Look at how terrible the circle that are suppose to bump out. They shouldn't even put a bump map on those thats how bad they look. Like disfigured nipbles.
Red: That is suppose to be a wall divider but it's just not even bumping out ? way to be lazy
Blue : this is the worst of all . Blurry as all get out and not even bumping out. I saw this and fell out of my chair.

When people say this game looks good are they blinded or just seeing the eye candy ?
