no you cant combine them both into some uber armor
they remain individual but you can mix and match pieces

You can mix and match pieces in a set, but you can't hybridize individual pieces.

Ah ok, no you can't.

ALTHOUGH:
There are a few items such as the Falmer helm that count as equiped but doesnt use a slot.

i would just caution to make sure that you don't lose any perk bonuses with the armor that you choose.
