Ive started a necromancer before and was annoyed at how hard it was with only abiding by Necromancer skills. It was too tedious and annoying trying to raise dead as others were trying to pound on me... Then when trying to focus on mostly frost destruction i ran into problems fighting Draugr. Bleak falls was just too hard. Frustrated, i deleted him, but i want to start a new one. Any leveling tips or general tips on how to defend myself better?

you can just play him as a destruction mage until you can high level conjuration spells. Dead thrall is argubly one of the strongest/most fun spells in the game.

use ice magic?
