The Ruins of Kemel-Ze: Lore vs. Gameplay

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 11:56 pm

Minor annoyance, only. But it occurred to me, that the entire point of this book was that Dwemer automatons are steam powered and vulnerable to frost (no steam, no movement - makes sense). But in Skyrim, like the majority of creatures, spiders, spheres, and steam centurions are immune to frost. Kind of a shame. Just curious about the reasoning behind it.

It's most likely that there wasn't any reasoning.

Too bad it's been like that since Morrowind. They are supposed to be vulnerable both to frost and magic but they are actually very resistant to any kind of magical attack.

I know this is an old thread but the question still remains.
Being a frost specialized caster is difficult in Skyrim with all the Nords and native creatures with resistance against it,
but the serious threat are the Dwemer constructs with their immunity to it, as if it wasn't hard enough already...
Not only is it unfair but also disrespectful to the lore, unless there is some kind of explanation (constructs created with Skyrim's cold in mind?).
Aren't they still operated through water and steam, or is that only the ones in Morrowind? I've noticed they use soul gems as some kind of battery.

Yeah, I'd still like to know the reasoning behind this.

Actually i just used some "getav" commands to find the stats of a Centurion Master, it has 100% Frost resist, no other elemental resists or weakneses, 25% magic resist, but no damage resist at all. It is unarmored  Also over 500 points of stamina, 1000 hitpoints and 15 magicka :hehe:

Since it's a mehcanical enemy axes' bleeding effect doesn't work on them, so the best way to deal with one is to use a sword, one- or two-handed

I'm really stretching it here, but maybe the Dwemer in Skyrim made their automatons resistant to frost because of the climate?

Nevermind, Stalhrim already said it better.

I know. I'd be willing to swallow it if they had even made some half-assed attempt to make it mesh with the lore. I can suspend disbelief, but throw me a bone here.

I think the reason for the ability to withstand frost elemental damage would be to do with the design. Due to the Climate the steam powered automaton's were purposely designed to cope in the wintry environments of the province.

Lore isn't the divine gospel...it's someone's 'interpretation' of things...and that 'someone' varies from the internet anonymous, to people who have axes to grind and crosses to bear. I didn't realise that the CM's were supposed to be as statistically strong as Tojka suggests....makes me thankfull that I use Elemental Fury a lot.

Edit: And you are all wrong...it's because the temperature in those deep underground caverns is consistently warm due to the insulating effects of the caverns, and the amount of heat and steam from the machinery...I certainly haven't found any ice or frost around the automatons.

Oh, I know. I just wish there was something in-game that helped explain it is all - a scholarly journal, a scrap of paper, etc. This is just a small nerdy hangup. Certainly not a game breaker.

Frost resist...magic resist....but a tiny tiny arrow can still take down a centurion in two sneak shots.

That's ONE STRONG ARROW....or one weak centurion

Yeah I wondered how arrows take down automatons as well. They are big pieces of Dwemer metal, that can be pierced easily with an iron arrow...

Meh. I use my imagination to assume that the arrow was a lucky (or even skilled) shot by a skilled archer that found a joint in the construct's armor and hit a vital conduit or two. Not much more unbelievable than an archery expert killing someone in full plate with one shot. Y'all sometimes overthink this stuff too much.

I wouldn't consider anything in that book reliable evidence. The author gave me the impression of being a braggant seeking to enhance his reputation. He probably never went near a working Dwemer construct.

i always assumed the arrow pierced or caused a small specific hole in a "steam valve" causing the steam to stop powering the thing as all the steam was released and so it had nothing to power it anymore.
