Okay I volunteered to find the murderer but when it comes time to go back and investigate the crime scene there is nothing. The pointer arrow keeps pointing and I crawl over the area and nothing pops up.

follow the blood trail from the grave to a house that won't be named for spoiler reasons.

After a while the crime scene disappears. I don't know what triggers it.

Ayway, the Blood on the Ice quest is notorioulsy flawed. You should get your quest moving by buying a house in Windhelm (don't decorate it yet!) and entering it.

No need. Do as Prailos suggested, follow the blood trail - you will see splatters of blood on the ground, stairs or low on walls. Follow that to the house it leads to.
