Keep seeing weird flashing white/black boxes

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:42 am

My specs:
Win7 X64
i7 920 at 4 Ghz
GTX 480 @ 800/1600/2000
12gb DDR3 1333

Im getting weird flashing shapes here and there when i roam the wastes, things like little white fuzzy spots, white rectangles, or black rectangles, they only apear when i look at things at certain angles, not really a gamebreaker, but its damn annoying.

Not getting any heat or frame rate problems... so uh... CURE YOU MAGIC BOXES!

Is it only long range viewing for you?

How you like the 470 btw? I was gonna SLI some of those, but to lazy lol... Got a bunch of old 260's sitting round.

Iv tinkered with like every function... This isnt the same issue as the microstuttering one is it?

Also noticing the MASSIVE video ram consumption on NV, 1000MB in use at all times... hell MoH only uses 900, and its a new engine and graphics.

I thought maybe it was an intentional effect, like your eyes are supposed to be adjusting to the bright sun after waking up.

Then I thought I was just seeing things (with my own eyes).

Then I read this thread.

Obsidian blew it again, folks.

Yeah it seems to do it when im looking at long range objects. When I get in towns it really doesnt do it. Btw I love my 470. Runs all my games great.

no its not the microstuttering issue.
every once in a while a black box " floating rectangle will apear i think it is something to do with HDR/bloom/or AA

Well i dont know about you, but i dont see flashing white/black boxes when i walk around :cryvaultboy:

Im sure its just a driver conflict, im loving NV btw, im SOOO happy to see custom ammo types again.

So unrelated but did anyone die laughing when a praying mantis in the highway station randomly flipped [censored] and exploded in the bathroom?

I'm having this problem also and I thought it was just me and it is damn annoying along with the other things it makes my game unbearable because its like every 5 seconds a white box like desktop icon size pops up and goes away it almost looks as if the game is trying to minimize and then stops hopefully the devs will fix it in the next patch.

I get the same weird white boxes. Sometimes white bleeds through seams in textured objects.

Win7 x64
Intel i7 930
Nvidia GTX480
6GB RAM

Updated drivers as of yesterday.

Try turning antialiasing down, then off.

This, and the tiny white speckles around edges, are being caused by this (at least for me).

I saw this, just like you did, but recognized it from a different game. It was fixed in that game, so... yea. In that game, it only happened at 8x or higher AA, not sure with NV yet as I am not yet home.

Same problem here. Obviously this game hates the Nvidia 400 series. I'll try the no AA thing. Thanks for the info.

Win7 x64
Intel i7 930
Nvidia GTX470 x2 (SLI)
6GB RAM

I had a really long day yesterday and thought my eyes were throwing phosphenes to tell me to go to bed. Finally figured out they were square and black or white, ergo a glitch. And to answer whoever asked the question, yes, it only seems to happen with distant objects.

Unrelated query: Those viewing this are likely Nvidia 4X0 owners, so here's a question. Has anyone tried or felt the need to try the DX9 "fix" that everyone seems up in arms about? I've noticed slower frames around people, but not enough to distract. Is it because we're immune or are the cards just that much faster or what?

That, and most rigs running 4 series cards are also containing other high quality high speed parts, the root issue most likely stems from old pc syndrome.

I think I found a workaround for this other than playing without any AA at all (which to me is unacceptable).

This is going to sound weird, but, set your Screen Effects to None. Not HDR, not Bloom, but none. Two things happened for me:

1) The white "popping" and the black boxes completely went away. I can run 8X AA still.

2) Here's the weird part. HDR is still enabled.

Now, I run SLI, and there have been long-standing, known problems with Gamebryo, HDR, and SLI. That might explain it. But, it works for me. Hope this helps someone else.

I thought this was an intentional effect, lol. If it isn't then O.o how'd this get past testing?

The flashing only happens when I shoot my guns. running with HDR, x8 AA. It's pretty quick and doesn't stick around. I originally thought it was supposed to be a fancy vegasy flash when you hit an enemy. If that isn't the case then, yeah...

Turning off the bloom and HDR effects fixed the problem for me on a GTX 460.
I actually think it made the whole game look better, more crisp.

I needed to do the DX9 fix for playable frames on my 470.

I am also seeing the issue and I think the flashing white/black boxes are related to how things like the zephyr's are being rendered. It seems the alpha channel is not being set the moment it is being spawned.

Sounds like turning off Bloom/HDR is a workaround though so I'll give that a try.

The flashing white screen artifacts are a known Nvidia driver issue conflicting with the way AA and HDR are implemented in-game. I think it only effects 400-series cards. In the short term, you can turn off either AA or HDR to make it go away. Nvidia is apparently working on a new driver to fix this.

This problem is separate from the NPC slowdown that the d3d9.dll file fixes. That fix has no bearing on this issue.

I'm interested in the above statement that turning off screen effects fixes the issue while keeping HDR effects and AA. I will test this as soon as I get home tonight and see if it works on my non-SLI GTX460.

Edit: Tested this, no HDR effects when set to 'none'. There is still lens flare/sun glare, but the overall lighting is quite different. I took comparative screenshots from my first save after exiting Doc Mitchel's house--without HDR, the distant hills are much darker and everything looks a bit flat. Oh well, I'll live without AA or live with the white flashes until a new Nvidia driver comes out.
