General Discussion v Spoilers Section?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:09 am

OK, I've wondered for a while how you can have a "General Discussion" with zero spoilers entering into it. Granted the term "spoiler" means different things to different people and, sure, some things with quest details are obviously spoilers, but somethings may be spoilers for some that seem innocuous "general discussion" for others. For example, I don't even want to know what an item looks like before I'm ready to craft/smith it. That being said: I wouldn't have been upset if I had seen what the Dragonplate armor looked like before I smithed it, but it still would've been a spoiler to me. :P

As fast as threads get pushed off the 1st page of the General Discussion section I guess I'm in the minority.

it seems like a lot of people dont even KNOW there is a spoilers section.

if in doubt, i always post in spoilers.

Yeah, I only post here because a spoiler is almost always likely to find it's way into somone's post. Plus, the only time I've really looked at General it turned into a [snip] slinging contest.

I suppose general talk goes in the general section, but I don't see the point. I could make a topic to say

"ummmm... I like Skyrim."
or
""uhhhhh... it rained somewhere in Skyrim today."

Anything else is probably too spoilerish; I avoid it in case I start babbling too many details.

I know, when I typed that, I was like oh wait. Someone would freak out if this was in General.
But yeah, I was delighted to see rain the very few times that I have so far. I really want some thunder & lightning; all I've seen was light drizzles.

Yeah, that's the way I see it. "The scenery is beautiful." or "The map is huge." or "The races are interesting." and, even then, once you get into details it's spoilery.

Now, I haven't seen lightning (not natural, anyway :P), but I've heard thunder in
Spoiler
Solitude
and I know I'm not imagining it because one of my cats perked his head up when he heard it.

In my mind spoilers are quest details. If a question begins with the words "How do I..." or "Where do I..." that question needs to be in the spoilers forum.

Threads about gameplay mechanics, graphics, patches, which NPC chick looks the hottest, ect, ect, should probably be in the General forum.

For sure, but don't details usu slip in though? Like: "I got stuck in X location doing Y quest from Z NPC." or "I hope they patch the Septimus quest so that if dies jumping down to the Oghma Infinium..." or "Muiri's the hottest. Who's she? She's a client for a DB assassination.".

Like I said I haven't spent much time in General - I just don't see how the discussions avoid spoilers. :o Maybe I'll take another look.

The hints, cheats, and spoilers forums are for getting help with the game. So if you're looking for a specific NPC, or can't figure out a quest, or you want to know the long term viability of a built you post it in here.

The general forum is for discussing the game without bringing up such specifics. So if you want to discuss the broad situation faced by Khajiit in the province you can use Skyrim General, but if you want to find out the schedule of a specific caravan you use the hints forum.

Unfortunately not every one follows these standards. Lucky we have you moderators to help us with that. :thanks:

Oh, I get it - I'm just saying that it would seem that more times than not a spoiler would leak into the discussion in the form of an example.

Edited for usage.

Yeah, a lot of stuff gets moved here because somewhere in the thread someone posted a spoiler, and not because the topic or OP itself was necessarily spoilery. Though honestly I've seen people yelling "OMG SPOILER! MY GAME IS RUINED!" and getting threads moved for extremely trivial reasons, while other threads that are actually pretty spoilery don't seem to garner any complaints (and thus don't get moved). Probably something to do with what people choose to title their posts...

I always wonder how anyone can ask "which is better greycloak or Tullius" and then say they dont want spoilers.

I thought General was for [censored]ing about bugs in the game (not specific bugs, just the fact that there are any) and demanding one's money back. And demanding lots of huge patches NOW.

Sure seemed that way the few times I've looked in there.

I always wonder how anyone can ask "which is better greycloak or Tullius" and then say they dont want spoilers.
Greycloak by far. The only one with enough sense to stay the heck out of the war.

Personally I think it is a bit ridiculous especially with all of the vids on youtube that people have access to. I know...moderators police youtube...LOL...

Yeah, I try to be as specific as possible in the titles of the threads I start (for searchability reasons mostly), but also so someone won't wander into a major spoiler about the end of the MQ because I titled my thread: "So how many timez...". :P
