Vampires; Are they fun?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 3:13 am

I've done many RP concepts on Skyrim so far, but there's one I am wary of.

Judging from Vampirism's artcle on UESP, they seem to be, more or less, the same as they were in Oblivion. In the sense that there's almost no benefit for being one.

My idea was, I wanted to try and be one as early as possible with infection and try to play through several levels as one, consistently. But it just sounds... unfun.

Specifically, the fact they health and stamina don't regenerate, even at stage 1, when you're outside. That's a fairly debilitating issue.

As a final note; Vampires were good in Morrowind because at least there were several quests dedicated to just them. They really need to bring that back if Vampirism is to have a reason to be in the game.

I've heard with some mage specific perks vampires can make awesome chracters for destruction spell users, but to me it's not all that great with the downsides. I hate traveling to Mehrune Dagon's shrine just to collect daedra hearts and other free crap, I couldn't imagine having to constantly feed, or avoid day light, or "oh no what happens if I meet a dragon or a mage casting fire spells".

Werewolf or just regular ol' uninfected dragonborn for me.

Vampire's get a 25% increase in Illusion spell potency, and a 25% sneak increase, as well as spells at different stages, and Night Eye. I love playing a vampire

I tend to keep it on most of my characters, but I have, to date, -never- bothered to activate beast form. My weapons and armor do better than claws and flesh. But this isn't about werewolves.

Vampires can be fun if you just like the roleplaying aspects.

I just wish the vamps of Skyrim are more like the ones in Elder Scrolls lore.

Alas, roleplaying can only help so much. If I die too much because my no stamina-regen won't allow me to run from a fight or something.

Suppose there's no harm in 'trying'.

Most of the inconvenient weaknesses can be overcome.

The no magicka, health, and stamina regen during the day can be nullified by perks or items and the stat point penalties can be minimized by feeding.

Which slumps you down to stage 1 vampirism, cutting off most of the bonuses.

I just really don't get the direction they've been trying to take vampires.
I don't see how it could be fun?

I guess if you really play a vampire because of the bonuses, for some classes it's really not that great.

I like being a vampire because of the undead theme, since I am also necromancer.

I also get a huge bonus from being a vampire, since I have the necromage perk and that benefits both me and my thralls.

Be a Dunmer, it cancels out the stage 1 and 2 fire weakness.

But I love being a vampire...the vamp sight ability has to be THE most useful ability in the game, and I can barely get along without it on my other characters. Avoiding the sunlight? Feh. Just enchant a few pieces of armor to regenerate your health/stamina/magicka. It's not difficult at all. Forgetting to feed? Get your sneak level up, and always feed before leaving a town.

It's honestly not as annoying as you'd think it'd be.

Actually the best bonuses of being a vampire are independent of the stage you are in, so meh.

As a necromage vampire, stamina is not really an issue now that I've got an Amulet of Talos. If I want to sprint I become ethereal, the cooldown is shorter than the effect, so I just become ethereal again as soon as it wears off. I don't recommend becoming a vampire without Necromage though.

What's Necromage come from? I tried searching on the UESP but it just links to the warlock page and the necromancer section.

It's a Restoration perk. Requires 70 Restoration though. Kind of arduous to unlock the vampire's true potential.

As said it's a restoration perk that makes all your spells more powerful against the undead... Since your character is considered undead, all your magic equipment and spells are more powerful.

my 2nd character i let turn into a vampire. i dont have any spell perks or what not so the vampire spells like drain life or whatever doesnt do much and i never really use any of them. being a khajit that sneaks around everywhere though makes the 25% harder to detect buff you get with being a vampire nice. walking around in the daylight isnt hard to do either. i just stocked up on all the booze i could find so when i run low on stamina i just drink a bunch. turning into a level 4 vampire while in a town can be kinda fun also, thats when the invisibility power comes in handy...

Vampiric Drain svcks. Even at Stage 4 it doesn't do damn near enough damage to warrant using over any other form of offense. I think even Flames does more damage. It's more of a novelty than actually useful for anything.

I remembering that in Oblivion the worst part about being a vampire was that it changed your face.
Vampirisim at least forces the player to incorporate the idea into his playing style - while werewolfs change when they want (if they get Hience's ring they change more than once a day), and I understand not wanting to add forcible murdering people in order to avoid quest givers and vendors dying, but there could be a forceful transformation every few days if player doesn't change and kills on his own.

There will be mods to make both game styles better though.

I'm not a fan of being a vamp but i do love being a Werewolf. I only ever transform to get to a location quicker as i dont use a horse. You can really cover some ground as a WW :)
