at early levels you would want Muffle. it muffles the sound of your movement.

later on you can take it as a perk.

None at all are must have
Muffle, paralyze and invisibility are all very useful though

Detect life if you don't have aura whisper I'd say. Never know when you're creeping around a house looting something, only to find out the owner woke up and went downstairs. Also handy for assassinations.

I think fury and it's group affecting incarnations are VERY useful for crowd control and creating distractions.

Calm is a thief's best friend IMO. Combine with level 100 pickpocket for extra lulz.

Yeah, I'd say most illusion spells are necessary, as well as Alteration.
Water breathing and magelight to help you scour every corner. Detect Life and Detect Dead will help you keep track of who's around you. Telekinesis will help you steal from your nice dark hiding places.

None are necessary, but many are fun. Fury/calm is great for groups. Invisibility is great for avoiding conflicts. Paralyze is great for combat control. Muffle is great for leveling illusion or if you don't join the Thives Guild or Dark Brotherhood. If you join those guilds, then it's only really useful for leveling illusion.

I love this game. The answer is any you want. I am thief and I use and own all of them. By far my favorite is bound bow. Being a thief requires you to use a bow, actually I shouldn't say requires, it's just fun. Anyway bound bow is the best for a few reasons.

1. Your perks in archery reflect onto the bound bow. It's exactly like using a real bow.

2. You get to use the most powerful arrows in the game, daedric arrows. You don't choose which arrow type it just automatically comes with 99 deadric arrows.

2. It doesn't weigh anything

3.you don't have to worry about waisting time getting your precious rare daedric arrows back.

4. It looks cool.

The one downfall I can see is no enchanting. I don't use enchanting on bows anyway but I'm sure a ton of people do and would miss that. I like my bow kills to be clean.

Eh, I have 75+ hours logged onto my archer/assassin/thief character and I've never used a spell. None are really must-have spells, but muffle and invisibility are useful. Calm and fury are great spells once you can dual-cast them, but you don't really need them as a thief.

I never enchant my bows either, and for the same reasons as you.

I feel if your enemy starts to flame or get shocked it ruins the whole experience. Also I know this isn't true but if you use a now with an enchantment on it and the enchantments run out your bow isn't as powerful as it would be if you just left it alone with no enchanting. Even though it's the same damage as a bow without enchantments I feel this way and I hate having to keep using gems to restor it. I once had an enchanted bow that ony four kills before it ran out.
