No desire to use the best things in game?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:34 pm

Usually when I play role playing games I don't have a mind set of what character I want to be (nord warrior, argonian thief etc.). However, one thing that always got to me was that I never really felt the desire to wear top tier armor like daedric or use the best weapons in game.

It is the same way with skills; I have no desire to level up my skills to a hundred.

I think it is because I love the challenge and intrigue of a new character that has not many perks, levels, skills, items, weapons and armor, while a heavily invested character has everything.

Does anyone feel the same way?

I feel the same way, and it usually leads to me making a crap-ton of characters. I've already made about 6 characters (many of them remakes of one character -- for example, two "Gray-Tale"s and two "Alexander"sand I'm only 150 hours in and only completed the MQ, Civil War, and College of Winterhold.

I usually really like the early stages of an RPG, where you're scraping to get by, trying to scrounge up enough loot to afford a couple of healing potions, and every perk point/attribute point you spend feels like a life or death decision. I'd like to see that stage last as long as possible. I also like to be challenged not just for my shooter skills but for my character building (otherwise I'd just play a shooter.) Some games pull it off, though I don't think enemy level scaling is a very satisfying way to handle it. The situations you find yourself in should become more intense and challenging, not just your enemy's health bar.

Meh, I'll like starting like this. But after, i do like seeing progression. And eventually i do love seeing my character having The Best Gear in the game. Makes me feel accomplished. Like "Yeah, i own this place after all I've done!"
And it seems like it's continually building up to a climix, where I'll reach that point where my character is the best it can be. And i like pursuing that.

Sure. I prefer the journey, the experiences that take you to the destination. Maxing skills is definitely not on the radar. I try to let my character progress naturally based on the skills she uses most and I enjoy the challenge of making the best of what she has at the time.

Yes, this was mainly what I was trying to get at. I like the journey to the "climix" (esp. the beginning), but not really the climix itself, since once I get to that point I have no desire on continuing with that particular character.

I guess another reason I dislike getting the best things ingame is because I don't ever see my character as dragonborn saving the world and singlehandedly deciding the fate of the province. It's not only a matter of maxing skills and equipment at that point, but rather everyone looking up to you in awe.

My fondest memories of Morrowind are when you're just starting out, have a rusty dagger, dirty rags on your back and a single heal potion. You're creeping around in some dark cave, dagger in one hand and torch in the other, and your torch burns out. Ah, good times.

And then you rip your shirt off and go Redguard on the [censored]es that thought they could stand between you and the scrumptious loot in that damned cave.

Ah, yes. Good times.

I have yet to feel the need to stay away from some of the best stuff in the game primarily because I do not have much of it. Also after marrowinds "I swing my dai katana and everything within 30' feet dies instantly and I absorb 100s of hp" type of stuff I made by enchanting in that game I have yet to feel the sense of overpower in skyrim or in oblivion outside making 4 pieces of gear 25% chameleon.

Yeah self restriction is great. I got my nightingale armor and immediately stuffed it in a chest at home. The more challenging three game is the better

I have fully enchanted Deadric Gear and I walk around with falmer gear un enchanted just for shiz and giggles. Its more fun playing on the hardest difficulty and having to actually block and use tactics instead of 3 shotting everything that runs infront of you lol. :)

Unfortunately I lack the self discipline to prevent myself from powerleveling smithing the last 15 levels so that I can get my double enchanted dragon armor of flaming death. Challenge goes out the window and yeah, invariably I lose interest in the character soon after. Presented with new challenges that actually required that level of gear though, it'd remain interesting. Pretty soon mods will be able to do just that.

i have used the end game armors/weapons boosted thru alch/ench/smithing in master difficulty and for me it was satisfying for about a day. But the game just wasnt the same, to me it was basically godmode/one shot kills.

i play my game on master difficulty but wearing legendary fur, one bow, one smithed sword, healing hands/healing, shueld(targe of the bloodied) i love that shield, and steed stone. No helm just a crafted plain tan mage cap with 48% archery boost w/waterbreathing.

Any of the better stuff/items in game for me on master difficutly just destroys/no challenge for me.

Besides i like the detail design of the fur armor. Its more earthed look imo. Deadra is great ive used it but for me in master difficulty Daedra(legendary) is game over wha else is there.

If the game (especially the dragons) in master difficulty matched the defense/dmg of the best items boosted in game then it might be worth equiping/using them.

But those items for me stay on the maniquins/barrels/chests stored away.

yesterday i moved up to a full set of scaled armor minus helm. And im really enjoying this set w/ancient nord helm. Game still has strong challenge with this set.
